Week # 4 - Water Heaters & Furnaces - 4 Days / 10 Hours per day

Classroom

  • Review the theory of operation of the Suburban, Dometic and early model Atwood water heaters and furnaces
  • Learn to read the circuit flow charts and wiring diagrams
  • Identify the key test points of both the water heaters and the furnaces
  • LP gas (propane) burner sequence of firing operation
  • Function and operation of the 120 volt AC heating element found in the water heaters
  • Identify the various types of thermostats used in today’s water heaters and furnaces

Hands-On Labs

Water Heaters

  • Component Identification and constructional differences between the different brands
  • Troubleshooting Procedures on:
    • Temperature controls (Thermostats, ECO and Pressure – Temperature Relief Valves) testing and replacement procedures.
    • Circuit board operation and testing
    • Heating element(s) 12 volt DC and 120 volt AC – testing and proper removal procedures
    • LP gas ignition system - gas valve, electrode (ignitors)
    • Preventative Maintenance Procedures and Winterizing procedures for gas and electric water heaters.

Furnaces

  • Component Identification and constructional differences between the different brands
  • Troubleshooting Procedures and repair techniques on
    • Temperature controls (wall mounted thermostats, high temperature limit switch and sail switch)
    • Blower motor – diagnosing, removing and replacing defective motorstesting
    • Circuit board testing procedures
    • LP gas ignition system - gas valve, electrode (ignitors)
    • Preventative maintenance procedures for forced air ducted furnace units

Final Exam will require hands-on troubleshooting and repairing of defective RV Water Heaters and Furnaces. Requires a passing Grade of 70% or better to receive credit for this class.
