Are You Towing Your RV Over the Legal Weight Limit

Many RV owners never consider the legal weight limits involved when towing their rig. However, understanding weight regulations can make the difference between traveling legally and unknowingly breaking the law.

In a recent Tech Tip Tuesday from the National RV Training Academy, Todd addressed a viewer’s question about towing a large fifth wheel. The RV owner explained that he had purchased a forty-five-foot fifth wheel and later discovered his combined vehicle weight exceeded twenty-six thousand pounds.

That discovery raised an important concern. In Texas, towing a vehicle combination that exceeds twenty-six thousand pounds may require a non-CDL Class A license. The viewer calculated the numbers and realized his Ram 3500 weighed about eleven thousand pounds, and the fifth wheel had a gross vehicle weight rating of seventeen thousand pounds. When combined, the potential weight reached nearly twenty-nine thousand pounds.

This situation highlights a reality many RV owners do not realize until after they purchase their RV.

Why RV Dealers May Not Mention Licensing Requirements

Many buyers assume the dealership will explain everything they need to know before towing their new RV home. In reality, that responsibility falls on the owner.

Todd explained that the primary motivation of an RV salesperson is to sell the RV. Discussing licensing requirements that could delay or complicate a purchase may not always happen during the sales process. Some dealers understand the regulations, while others may not fully know the rules themselves.

Because of this, RV owners must research the legal requirements that apply to their specific setup.

Understanding the Twenty Six Thousand Pound Rule

The key number mentioned in the viewer question was twenty six thousand pounds. When a combined vehicle weight rating exceeds that threshold, certain states require a special driver license classification.

Todd explained that this rule is not really a gray area. If your combination exceeds twenty six thousand pounds, you may need a different license depending on your state laws.

Many RV owners travel for years without being asked about their license classification. However, that does not mean the requirement does not exist.

When RV Weight Laws May Be Checked

In everyday driving situations, law enforcement officers may not immediately verify weight classifications or licensing requirements. Their attention often focuses on immediate safety concerns.

However, Todd noted that situations like crossing state lines may increase the chances of these regulations being reviewed. If an RV owner gets stopped and the combined weight exceeds the legal limit for their license class, it could create complications.

Understanding the rules before traveling helps prevent unnecessary stress on the road.

Insurance Risks of Towing Illegally

Another important concern involves insurance coverage.

If an RV owner becomes involved in an accident while towing illegally, an insurance company could potentially deny a claim. For example, if an RV rolls over and investigators determine the driver required a special license that they did not have, the insurance provider may question the validity of the claim.

While each situation may vary, this possibility highlights why legal compliance matters.

A Surprising Requirement for the Driving Test

The viewer in Todd’s Tech Tip mentioned preparing for a driving skills test to obtain the correct license. One unusual detail stood out.

To complete the test, drivers must often bring the same type of RV they plan to operate. That raises an interesting question. If a driver needs the license to tow the RV legally, how do they bring the RV to the testing location before passing the test?

Todd ended the discussion with that humorous observation, reminding RV owners that understanding regulations early can save time and frustration.

For RV owners who want deeper technical knowledge about RV systems, maintenance, and safe operation, training programs like those offered at the National RV Training Academy help build confidence and practical skills for life on the road.
