As RV electrical systems become more advanced, owners are discovering new ways to power their rigs while traveling. With features like Ford Pro Power Onboard, onboard generators, inverters, and lithium battery systems, it is natural to ask whether you can charge your RV while driving.

In this episode of Todd’s Two Minute Tech Tip Tuesday, Todd revisits a question that generated a lot of discussion after a previous video. Many viewers shared that they successfully use their Ford truck’s onboard inverter to send 120 volt power to their RV while towing. Todd agrees that it can be done, but he encourages RV owners to think beyond what is possible and consider what is actually the safest approach. His message comes down to one important idea.

The Question

The original question centers around using a Ford truck equipped with an onboard inverter system to provide 120 volt power to a travel trailer while driving down the road.

Several viewers commented that they already use this setup to charge their batteries and power their RV while traveling. Todd acknowledges these experiences and understands why the idea is appealing. However, the discussion does not stop there.

Looking Beyond Convenience

Every truck and trailer combination already includes safety systems designed for towing. The trailer has a breakaway switch, and the seven pin electrical connector is designed to disconnect if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle.

The question Todd raises is whether a standard 120 volt connection offers the same level of protection.

The power cord uses exposed male prongs, and unlike the trailer wiring connector, it is not specifically designed as a breakaway connection. That difference becomes an important part of evaluating the overall safety of the system.

What Do Ford and DOT Say?

Todd explains that he researched both Department of Transportation guidance and Ford’s recommendations.

According to Todd, the Department of Transportation indicates that any setup should meet safe standards. He also notes that Ford advises owners not to use the system while traveling unless approved equipment is used. His research led him to references for UL approved equipment, but he continues asking an important question.

Is there a solution that provides both a secure locking connection and a true breakaway design for a 120 volt power cord?

That uncertainty is why Todd remains cautious when discussing this type of installation.

A Responsibility to Recommend Safe Practices

As an instructor at NRVTA and someone who teaches RV solar and inverter systems, Todd explains that recommending equipment carries responsibility.

He points out that RV owners may choose to build their own systems and make their own decisions. However, professional installers have an added responsibility to consider liability if they recommend or install a system that later contributes to an incident.

That is why Todd chooses to approach the topic carefully.

Rather than simply asking whether something works, he asks whether it represents the safest recommendation for the average RV owner.

When It Makes Sense

Todd makes an important distinction.

Using the truck’s onboard inverter while the truck is parked presents a completely different situation.

When parked, the onboard inverter can provide 120 volt power to the RV, helping run appliances while simultaneously charging the batteries. In that situation, Todd explains that the setup works well.

His concern applies specifically to using the system while the truck and trailer are traveling down the road.
