Welcome back to Tech Tip Tuesday, brought to you by the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA)—the largest hands-on RV training academy in America! Today, Brian Henson, an expert specializing in propane and exteriors, shares an essential tip on how to accurately monitor your RV’s propane levels to avoid unexpected shortages, especially during the colder months.

Why Monitoring Your Propane Levels is Important

If you’ve been Rving for a while, you’re probably familiar with the old-school method of picking up your propane cylinder and giving it a little shake to guess how much is left. Unfortunately, that method isn’t always reliable—especially in winter, when running out of propane can mean no heat, no hot water, and no stove when you need it most.

To take the guesswork out of checking propane levels, Brian introduces a propane meter that provides an accurate and easy-to-read indicator of how much propane is left in your tank.

How the Propane Meter Works

This propane gauge is a simple yet effective device that can be used on:
✔️ RV propane tanks
✔️ Grills
✔️ Other propane-powered appliances

It uses a color-coded system:
🟢 Green – Your tank is full or near full.
🟡 Yellow – Your propane level is running low.
🔴 Red – You’re almost out! Time to refill.

This visual indicator is especially helpful during winter nights when you rely on propane for heat and cooking.

Easy Installation in Just Minutes

Setting up the propane gauge is incredibly simple:

1️⃣ Attach the meter directly to the propane cylinder, just like you would with your regulator.
2️⃣ Connect your regulator behind it.
3️⃣ Turn on the propane and ensure it’s working correctly.

Safety First: Check for Leaks

After installation, always check for leaks using a liquid leak detector (or soapy water):
✔️ Spray around both fittings where the meter connects.
✔️ Spray where the regulator attaches.
✔️ Turn on the propane and watch for bubbles—if you see any, tighten the connections and test again.

Why This Propane Gauge is a Game-Changer

Daily or Weekly Checks – In winter, check it daily to avoid surprises. In summer, a quick check every couple of weeks is usually enough.
Accurate Readings – No more guessing or lifting heavy tanks!
Easy Removal & Reinstallation – If you need to refill, simply remove the gauge, refill your tank, and reconnect it—as easy as 1-2-3!

Final Thoughts

After using this propane gauge through the winter season, Brian found it to be highly accurate and extremely useful. Whether you’re a full-time RVer or a weekend warrior, this simple and affordable tool can save you from running out of propane at the worst possible time.
