Welcome back to another Two-Minute Tech Tip Tuesday, brought to you by the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA)โ€”Americaโ€™s largest hands-on RV training facility. This week, NRVTA instructor Jeremy Wagers, who specializes in both air conditioning and solar, walks us through the benefits and installation of one of the most popular RV upgrades today: the MicroAir EasyStart.

What Is the MicroAir EasyStart?

The MicroAir EasyStart is a soft start device designed to dramatically reduce the initial power surge when your RVโ€™s air conditioner kicks on. Normally, a compressor startup can demand 60 to 70 amps, which can strain your power systemโ€”especially when boondocking, using inverters, or running off a small generator.

The EasyStart spreads that initial load across micro-intervalsโ€”think of it like tapping a speed bag in the gym. Instead of one big electrical punch, itโ€™s a series of controlled bursts, followed by a final push to get the compressor running.

Why It Matters: AC + Solar or Generator = Trouble Without It

If youโ€™re running off solar or a portable generator, startup spikes can cause serious issuesโ€”bogging down your inverter, tripping breakers, or shortening equipment lifespan.

With the EasyStart:

  • Startup amperage drops dramatically (as low as 12โ€“14 amps vs. 70+ amps)
  • Inverter and generator life is extended
  • Compressor stress is minimized
  • Overall efficiency improves

In other words, your power system breathes easierโ€”and your AC still keeps you cool.

Installation Overview: Safety First

Jeremy emphasizes the importance of safety and having the right tools before starting the installation:

Tools Youโ€™ll Need:

  • Multimeter (for voltage checks & capacitor discharge)
  • Wire strippers/crimpers
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Electrical tape & wire nuts

Key Installation Steps:

  1. Remove the AC shroud and access the capacitor compartment.
  2. Discharge the capacitor safely using your multimeter.
  3. Wire in the EasyStart:
    • Black wire ties into the line powering the compressor.
    • White wire replaces the original white capacitor connection.
    • Brown wire connects to the original capacitor wire you removed.
    • Orange wire connects to the other side of the capacitor.
  4. Secure everything with wire nuts and tape.
  5. Cycle your AC five times to allow the EasyStart to โ€œlearnโ€ your compressorโ€™s profile.

Demonstrating the Results

Using a device called the Peacemaker, Jeremy ran live readings of the AC startup amperage. Hereโ€™s what he found:

  • Without the EasyStart: startup spikes up to 70 amps
  • With the EasyStart: startup spike peaked at just 14 amps, then quickly settled at 10.2 amps

Thatโ€™s a huge differenceโ€”and one that can protect your system and power supply over the long haul.

Perfect for Solar-Powered RVs

Jeremy also teaches NRVTAโ€™s solar class, and he strongly recommends installing a soft start if you’re considering solar. Air conditioners are among the most power-hungry appliances in your RV, and the EasyStart helps make your solar setup more practical and efficient.

Final Thoughts

The MicroAir EasyStart is more than a luxuryโ€”itโ€™s a smart investment in your RVโ€™s performance, efficiency, and longevity. Whether you’re a full-timer, a boondocker, or just looking for a smoother travel experience, this device is worth its weight in gold.

Key Benefits Recap:
โœ… Lower startup amps (protects your gear)
โœ… Runs smoother on solar or generator
โœ… Extends compressor and inverter life
โœ… Easier on campground pedestals
