Few RV problems are more frustrating than turning on the hot water faucet only to discover the water is cold or barely warm. Whether you are at a campground or preparing for your next trip, a water heater that is not working can quickly put a damper on your plans.
In this episode of Todd’s Two Minute Tech Tip Tuesday, Todd tries something different. He asks Artificial Intelligence for the most searched RV water heater troubleshooting advice. He reviews those recommendations and explains where they are helpful, where they fall short, and what he would actually check first. The result is a practical troubleshooting guide. It helps RV owners understand how their water heater works before replacing parts. The entire discussion is based on Todd’s demonstration and recommendations in the video.
Start by Determining What Is Actually Wrong
One of the first questions Todd asks is whether the problem is truly the water heater or simply the delivery of hot water.
If the water is only lukewarm, the water heater may actually be heating properly.
Todd recommends going outside and feeling the pressure and temperature relief valve on a tank style water heater. If the valve is hot, the water heater is doing its job. The problem may simply be that hot water is not reaching the fixtures inside the RV.
In many cases, this points to a bypass valve that has been left in the wrong position after winterization.
If your RV uses a Nautilus system, make sure it is back in its normal operating position. Todd recommends checking this before moving on to other possible causes. Other RVs may require locating the bypass valves behind the water heater and returning them to their normal positions.
No Hot Water on Propane
If your water heater will not operate on propane, Todd recommends starting at the propane source instead of immediately assuming the water heater has failed.
Begin by verifying that the propane cylinder contains fuel.
Next, turn the propane supply off and then back on again. Todd explains that this resets the excess flow valve located inside the propane pigtail fitting. If that valve has tripped, resetting it may restore proper propane flow to the appliance.
These simple checks take only a few moments and can eliminate one of the most common causes of propane related water heater problems.
Before Troubleshooting Electric Operation
Todd also points out something that AI completely overlooked.
Not every RV water heater actually has an electric heating element.
Before spending time troubleshooting the electric side of the system, verify that your particular water heater is equipped with electric operation.
If it does have an electric heating element, Todd recommends starting with the simplest electrical checks.
First, inspect the circuit breaker inside the RV by turning it off and then back on. Some Suburban models also include an exterior electric switch while others do not. Dometic models use a different configuration, making it important to understand which model is installed in your RV.
Without a multimeter, Todd explains there is only so much electrical troubleshooting that can be performed before more advanced diagnosis becomes necessary.
Remember That Twelve Volts Control Everything
Todd saves what he believes is the most important troubleshooting step for last.
If the water heater shows absolutely no signs of operation on either propane or electric, begin by checking the twelve volt system.
The twelve volt circuit powers the water heater control board. It also operates the propane gas valve and controls the relay for the electric heating element.
If the water heater is completely inactive, Todd recommends checking the control switch, the fuse, and verifying that the RV has twelve volt power available before looking for more complicated problems.
From there, the electrical signal can be traced to the circuit board if additional diagnosis is required.
