The Ultimate RV Education: Taking Every Class at National RV Training Academy

Hi we’re Steve and Erika Puvalowski from Mobile RV Tech Services! I (Steve) recently completed courses to become a Certified RV Technician and Certified RV Inspector, along with specialized courses in Generator and Solar systems, at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas. In this blog, I’ll break down what you can expect from these courses, what the experience is like, and share personal recommendations. I’ll also touch on the Texan RV park where the training is held.

Course Overview

The training begins with a mandatory Fundamentals Week, essential for both RV techs and inspectors. This week lays the groundwork for understanding RV systems, learning how to use a multimeter, and gaining hands-on experience. If you’re interested in learning the basics without starting a business, you can take this one week course in Athens TX or the RV owner’s home study course online at your own pace.

Fundamentals Week

Fundamentals Week is intensive and starts at 8 AM. You’ll cover everything from how RV systems work to hands-on troubleshooting. It’s a busy week, with classes running from early morning until late evening, and includes extra sessions like a class on cleaning gray and black tanks.

RV Tech Courses Weeks 1-5

After completing Fundamentals Week, you can proceed with the Advanced RV Tech courses. These include RV refrigerators, air conditioners, exteriors, water heaters, and furnaces. Each class follows a similar structure: classroom learning followed by hands-on practice. For instance, in the refrigerator class, you’ll disassemble and reassemble different models, troubleshoot issues, and even build a working refrigerator from spare parts.

Generator and Solar Courses

These additional courses are invaluable for anyone looking to expand their skill set. The Generator course covers everything from carburetors to voltage regulators, while the Solar course teaches you how to install and troubleshoot solar systems. Both courses helps you stand out in the RV service industry.

RV Inspector Course

The Inspector program spans three weeks, starting with Fundamentals Week. The first week focuses on classroom learning, while the second week involves hands-on inspections and report writing.

Texan RV Park & Campus

The Texan RV Park and the Big Red Schoolhouse form a cohesive campus for NRVTA students. Most students stay at the RV park, which offers a unique environment for learning and networking. The park has facilities like individual bathrooms, showers, a pet park, and a clubhouse.

Personal Experience and Recommendations

Attending NRVTA has been an invaluable experience. Here are some tips based on my journey:

  1. Prepare for Fundamentals Week: Clear your schedule, do your grocery shopping ahead of time, and be ready for intensive learning.
  2. Stay on Campus: If possible, stay at the Texan RV Park. It enhances the learning experience and offers numerous networking opportunities.
  3. Embrace the Hands-On Learning: The hands-on experience is what sets NRVTA apart. Make the most of it by fully engaging in every class and practical exercise.
  4. Plan for Continuing Education: To maintain your certification, you need to complete 24 continuing education credits annually. Stay proactive in your learning.
  5. Network and Connect: Build relationships with fellow students and instructors. They are valuable resources as you progress in your career.
  6. Utilize Resources: Make use of the school’s resources, including the home study course if you’re an RV owner looking to deepen your knowledge. Click HERE for more info

In summary, my time at NRVTA has been a transformative experience, providing me with the skills and confidence to excel in the RV service industry. If you’re considering attending, I highly recommend it. The comprehensive training and supportive community make it a top-notch choice for aspiring RV technicians and inspectors.
