Troubleshooting TV Signal Interference in Your RV

Today’s query comes from “Cascade 5,” who writes:

“Hi Todd, when watching the TV and the refrigerator comes on, the signal from the roof antenna gets scrambled. This also happens when you walk between the fridge and the TV. Glad I found your site.”

Let’s break down the issue and provide some actionable solutions.

Understanding the Problem

Cascade 5 reports that when the refrigerator turns on, the TV signal gets scrambled. Additionally, walking between the refrigerator and the TV also disrupts the signal. This issue is likely due to interference affecting the TV’s antenna signal.

Todd’s Analysis and Solutions

  1. Electrical Interference:
    • Parallel Wiring: Your TV antenna cable might be running parallel to an electrical line on the same circuit as the refrigerator. When the refrigerator kicks on, it draws significant amperage, which can create electromagnetic interference with the antenna signal.
    • Solution: Check the wiring layout in your RV. If possible, reroute the antenna cable away from high-voltage electrical lines to minimize interference.
  2. Loose Connections:
    • Coaxial Cable Check: The coaxial cable connecting your antenna to the TV should be shielded to prevent interference. However, a loose connection at either end could be causing signal disruption when the refrigerator turns on.
    • Solution: Inspect the coaxial cable for any loose connections. Gently wiggle the cable behind the TV and at the antenna end to see if the signal fluctuates. Tighten any loose connections and ensure the cable is securely fastened.
  3. Physical Obstructions:
    • Signal Path: Walking between the TV and the refrigerator might disrupt the signal if there’s a physical obstruction affecting the antenna’s line of sight.
    • Solution: Ensure there are no large metal objects or other potential obstructions between the TV and the antenna. Reposition the TV or antenna if necessary to improve the signal path.
  4. Antenna Type:
    • Antenna Quality: Depending on the type of antenna you have, it might not be adequately shielded against interference.
    • Solution: Consider upgrading to a more robust, shielded antenna system or switching to a satellite setup, which can provide a more reliable signal.

Additional Tips

  • Satellite TV: Switching to satellite TV can bypass many of these interference issues altogether. Satellite signals are less prone to disruption from electrical appliances.
  • RV Unplugged TV: For uninterrupted entertainment, visit RV Unplugged TV and enjoy a variety of RV-related shows and content without worrying about signal interference.

Conclusion

Interference with your RV’s TV signal, especially from appliances like the refrigerator, can be frustrating. By checking for loose connections, rerouting cables, and considering antenna upgrades, you can significantly reduce or eliminate these issues.
