A New Beginning Susie’s Journey to Confidence and Independence at the National RV Training Academy

For Susie, camping has always been a part of life. “I grew up camping,” she said. “But every time people asked me questions about RVs—how something worked or how to fix a problem—I felt like an imposter. I wanted to know more so I could really understand how everything worked.”

That motivation to learn took on new meaning when life changed unexpectedly.

A New Beginning | Susie’s Journey to Confidence and Independence at the National RV Training Academy

A Dream Delayed

In 2019, Susie had planned to attend the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas. But when her husband was diagnosed with brain cancer, she put everything on hold to care for him.

“All this time while he was sick, I kept thinking, ‘What am I going to do? How am I going to make a life for myself and my kids?’” she said.

When her husband passed away in July, Susie faced an uncertain future—but also an opportunity to start over. “I decided it was time to do something for me,” she said. “Coming to NRVTA was about learning, but it was also about taking back control of my life.”

Finding Strength and Confidence

Susie enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals Course, the school’s hands-on introduction to the systems inside every RV. Over the course of a week, students learn electrical, propane, plumbing, and appliance systems directly from certified instructors with real-world experience.

“I wanted to get rid of that imposter syndrome,” Susie said. “And now, I finally understand how things work. It’s empowering to know that I can do this on my own.”

Beyond the technical knowledge, she found something unexpected—a community that helped her rebuild her confidence. “It’s not just the RV part,” she explained. “It’s business. It’s relationships. It’s learning how to navigate the world again. This school gives you more than a skill; it gives you purpose.”

A Business with Purpose

Susie plans to specialize in RV tank cleaning and related maintenance services, building a business that lets her work independently while helping others on the road. “I’m adding a whole bunch of different aspects to my business,” she said. “And I just can’t wait to get started.”

For her, the program’s mix of technical training and business education has been key. “They don’t just teach you how to fix things—they teach you how to run a business,” she said. “It’s about understanding your customers, managing relationships, and creating something sustainable.”

Investing in Herself

Susie knows that starting something new can feel intimidating—especially when it means stepping out of your comfort zone. But she wants others to know that it’s worth it.

“If you’re thinking about coming to school and you’re on the fence—whether it’s the time, the money, or just fear—do it,” she said. “It’s an investment in yourself. You’ll gain knowledge, confidence, and community. It’s so much more than you think it’s going to be.”

The NRVTA Difference

The National RV Training Academy has helped thousands of students, from retirees to career changers, start new chapters in their lives. The academy’s programs are known for combining hands-on technical training with real-world business education, preparing students to become certified technicians or inspectors through the RVTAA and NRVIA.

Instructors like Todd Henson make complex systems easy to understand, guiding students through practical exercises that give them the confidence to repair, maintain, and even build RV-related businesses.

A Message of Hope

For Susie, NRVTA isn’t just a school—it’s a symbol of resilience. “This is more than learning about RVs,” she said. “It’s about learning to believe in yourself again. I came here to rebuild, and I’m leaving with a future.”

Her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to start over, and that the right training—and the right community—can help anyone rediscover their strength.
