Finding Purpose and Confidence on the Road - Josie’s Journey to Becoming an RV Technician at NRVTA

For Josie from the Pacific Northwest, life on the road had been an adventure — but she still felt like something was missing.

“I didn’t really know what to do with my life,” she said. “I wanted a career that made sense for me but couldn’t find what worked.”

One Sunday at church, everything changed.

“I was asking for prayer about what direction to take,” Josie recalled. “One of the people who prayed for me was Terry Cooper. He invited me to visit the school he was part of — the National RV Training Academy — and as soon as I saw it, everything just clicked.”

A New Beginning at NRVTA

Josie arrived in Athens, Texas, filled with excitement and curiosity. The first week, she enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals course, which provides a complete overview of every system in an RV.

“In that first week alone, I learned more about my own trailer than I had in the last two years of owning it,” she said. “I have an old ’90s trailer, and within two days, I understood more about how it worked — and how to fix it — than ever before.”

From Zero Experience to Real Confidence

Before coming to NRVTA, Josie had never worked with electrical systems or major appliances.

“I knew nothing about electricity or refrigeration,” she admitted. “But the teachers made sure we understood each specialty and left confident. They didn’t just tell you what to do — they showed you, then had you do it yourself.”

She especially loved the Refrigeration course, where each training unit was intentionally “bugged” with multiple issues to simulate real-world repairs.

“The instructor put so many bugs into the fridges — it was like learning five repairs in one,” Josie said. “That kind of hands-on repetition helped everything click.”

Living the Nomadic Life — With New Purpose

As a full-time traveler for two years, Josie had already experienced the joys and frustrations of RV life.

“Being a nomad has made me appreciate the fragility of my RV,” she said. “But now I actually know how to take care of it. Everything I’ve learned here has given me a new level of confidence.”

With her certifications and hands-on training, Josie is ready to take her knowledge on the road — this time as a professional helping others stay safe and confident in their RV journeys.

“I’d recommend NRVTA to anyone who wants to make the most of their time on the road,” she said. “Whether you want to understand your own RV or start a new career, this place gives you the skills and the confidence to do it.”
