For Nico and Shelly, life after retirement wasn’t about slowing down — it was about rediscovering purpose.
“This is something a husband and wife can truly do together,” Shelly said. “After years of being apart because of his career, now we get to spend every day learning and working side by side.”
A New Direction Through RV Training
Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Shelly had spent years supporting her husband through his demanding career. Nico, who was born in Africa and later moved to the U.S., built a long and dedicated career in service. When retirement came, both found themselves asking the same question: What now?
Two years ago, while living full-time in their fifth wheel, they discovered the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas. Nico was looking for something hands-on — a program that taught real-world repair skills while allowing him to stay active and independent.
“I’m a very hands-on person,” he said. “I learn by doing, not just reading. And when I found out that NRVTA has the largest hands-on RV training campus in the country, I knew this was the place.”
Two Paths, One Purpose
At first, Nico planned to become an RV technician and Shelly to be his helper. But after watching the courses and seeing the different career paths available, Shelly realized she wanted to go further.
“I saw there was another track — RV inspection,” she said. “That really excited me. I could learn how to inspect RVs for buyers and owners while he focused on the repair side. It’s something we can build together.”
So while Nico took the RV technician program, Shelly enrolled in the RV inspector course. Each week brought new discoveries — working with air conditioners, refrigerators, furnaces, and water heaters.
“The hands-on experience is incredible,” Nico said. “We’ve pulled slides, leveled trailers, tested appliances — you name it. It’s a deep dive, but by the end, you really understand how everything works.”
Healing Through Purpose
Beyond the skills, the experience brought something even more meaningful: healing.
“After retiring, I struggled with identity,” Nico shared. “I wasn’t sure who I was anymore or what my purpose was. Coming to NRVTA gave me direction again. It reminded me that I can still learn, grow, and help people.”
For Shelly, the transformation was equally profound. “This gave us something to do together — something that adds purpose to our passion for RVing,” she said. “Our RV became more than just a home; it became a place of healing.”
Adding Purpose to Passion
Now, as they prepare to launch their joint mobile service business, Nico and Shelly see their journey as an invitation to others seeking change.
“To us, RVing was always about freedom,” Shelly said. “But through NRVTA, we found purpose too. Passion with purpose — there’s no better life.”
Their message is simple: if you’re searching for a new start, independence, or a way to work and travel together, NRVTA is where that journey begins.
