For Jay, life had become a cycle of long days and unfulfilled purpose. After more than four years working in retail, he knew something had to change. “Every day, I stared at a metal ceiling and cement walls,” he said. “I was learning how to be of value to people—but I wasn’t doing anything that helped my soul.”

That realization set Jay on a journey that led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA)—a place he now describes as the best decision of his life.

A Search for Something More

Jay and his wife had been looking for a way to make life more meaningful. “We wanted to find something that made us happier and more fulfilled,” he said. “Then the idea came up—why not go full-time RVing? It sounded like a lot of fun, but honestly, it also sounded impossible.”

Like so many before them, they turned to YouTube for research. That’s where they found Todd Henson’s Tech Tip Tuesday videos and learned about the NRVTA in Athens, Texas.

The more they watched, the more Jay felt drawn to the idea. “I just wanted to understand my RV,” he said. “I wanted to know what to push, what not to push, and how to avoid wrecking anything. So I thought, I’ll go for one week, just to learn the basics.”

Finding His Calling at NRVTA

Jay enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals Course, a one-week class that introduces students to every major RV system—electrical, propane, water heaters, plumbing, and appliances.

“The first few days were like drinking from a fire hose,” Jay said with a laugh. “In the mornings, you get your classroom training, and in the afternoons, you move to the hands-on labs. That’s when it all started clicking.”

For Jay, it wasn’t just about learning how to fix things—it was about discovering a new sense of confidence and direction. “I knew I was supposed to be here,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this alive.”

From Fundamentals to Inspector

After completing Fundamentals, Jay decided to continue his education and enrolled in the RV Inspector Program. The advanced training gave him a deeper understanding of how RV systems work together—and how to evaluate them for safety and performance.

“NRVTA gave me the skills I needed,” he said. “And the amazing thing is, I realized that everything I’ve learned in my life up to this point—every transferable skill—was preparing me for this moment.”

Jay now plans to build a career as a certified RV inspector and mobile technician, combining his technical training with his people skills from years in retail. “This is the perfect blend of what I know and what I love,” he said.
