Finding Strength and Confidence Through RV Training - Jim’s Story at NRVTA

When Jim and his wife decided to travel the country full-time in their RV, they made a choice to live fully — no matter what life had in store. “A year ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Jim shared. “It’s been a long road — in and out of the hospital, 20 procedures under anesthesia — but I’ve had two clear scans since, and I wanted to make the most of that.”

For Jim, that meant doing something meaningful, something that gave him both confidence and control over his life on the road. “Six months ago, I didn’t even know if I’d be around to attend this program,” he said. “But we decided to go for it — to keep moving forward.”

Choosing Education for Peace of Mind

Jim and his wife don’t have a permanent home base. They live and travel full-time, exploring the country in their RV. But like many travelers, Jim wanted to understand his RV better — how it worked, how to maintain it, and how to fix small issues himself without waiting weeks for service.

“I didn’t come here to become a professional technician,” he explained. “I just wanted to learn how to work on my own RV — my unit alone — to save money and have peace of mind.”

That decision led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, a hands-on training facility that helps RV owners and aspiring technicians learn everything from basic maintenance to advanced troubleshooting.

Hands-On Learning That Makes a Difference

Jim enrolled in the RV Fundamentals course, a one-week intensive that covers every major system in an RV — electrical, plumbing, water, heating, and air conditioning.

“This program has been very hands-on,” he said. “It’s not just classroom work. You’re actually getting to test systems, diagnose problems, and see how everything connects. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about every system on my RV.”

Through live labs and guided instruction, NRVTA helps students apply what they learn immediately. For Jim, that approach exceeded his expectations. “It has met my expectations — actually, it’s exceeded them,” he said.

More Than Maintenance — A Renewed Sense of Confidence

While some NRVTA students come to start a new business or earn professional certification through RVTAA or NRVIA, Jim came for a different reason — to gain confidence and independence.

“Now, I understand my systems,” he said. “Whether it’s electrical, water, or air conditioning, I know what I’m looking at and what to do. That’s huge for me. It means I don’t have to rely on anyone else to tell me what’s wrong.”

His story is a testament to resilience and lifelong learning — proof that no matter where you are in life, it’s never too late to invest in yourself.

A Message for Other RVers

“If you’re looking for a school, I would highly recommend NRVTA,” Jim said. “The instructors, the hands-on training, the people — it’s been tremendous for me. You’ll learn more than you expect, and it will give you the confidence to really enjoy RV life.”

For Jim and his wife, RVing isn’t just about travel — it’s about freedom, hope, and the courage to keep moving forward.
