Get your RV Technician Certification in as little as 5 weeks!

Stephen never thought he’d find himself in the world of electrical systems, water heaters, or air conditioners. “I’m an artist,” he said, smiling. “This was all new to me — I was about as green as they come.”
But when his cousin told him about the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, he decided to take a leap of faith. “My cousin came here just a couple months before me,” Stephen said. “He told me how hands-on and practical the program was, and that I could learn to fix my own RV or even start my own business. That really caught my attention.”
Starting from Zero — and Succeeding
Stephen enrolled in NRVTA’s Certified RV Technician program, committing to the full five-week training. “I decided to do the full tech certification so I could be completely on my own — not have to work for someone else,” he said. “Starting my own business was the goal.”
Despite coming in with zero technical background, he found the structure of the training approachable. “The school starts with one week of Fundamentals,” Stephen explained. “Todd, the instructor, breaks everything down in a way that makes sense — even for people who have never done anything like this before. You learn the basics first so you can move into the hands-on work with confidence.”
Learning Every System in the RV
After the Fundamentals course, Stephen dove into specialty classes on refrigerators, air conditioners, furnaces, and water heaters — each with real-world practice built in.
“Every system you work on at NRVTA is live and functional,” he said. “You’re troubleshooting real problems, not just reading from a book. That’s what helped me understand the trailer as a whole. It’s one thing to study, but getting your hands on the components — that’s where it all clicks.”
That practical learning helped him move from uncertainty to confidence. “I never thought I’d be able to read wiring diagrams or take apart a water heater,” Stephen said. “But now, I get it — and I enjoy it.”
Freedom to Work and Travel
For Stephen, NRVTA wasn’t just about gaining skills — it was about building freedom. “This industry is growing fast,” he said. “There’s so much opportunity to live and work for yourself. Being able to travel, fix my own rig, and make money doing something useful — that’s priceless.”
He’s now building his own mobile RV repair business in Southern California, helping RV owners stay on the road and avoid long repair waits. “Just being able to work on my own trailer — let alone make a living at it — is amazing,” he said. “If anyone’s even thinking about getting into the RV field, I’d say definitely check out NRVTA.”
Building the Future of RV Service
Stephen is part of a nationwide network of certified technicians trained through NRVTA and supported by the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA). Together, these organizations are redefining what independent service looks like — putting integrity, skill, and customer care first.
Whether you’re a creative like Stephen, a retiree, or simply an RVer who wants more control, NRVTA’s hands-on programs make it possible to learn fast and start strong.
