From Camper to Confident RV Owner - How Michael Learned to Maintain His Fifth Wheel at NRVTA

For Michael, camping has always been a way of life. “As a little kid, I grew up tent camping,” he said. “Then we went from tents to pop-ups, and eventually to travel trailers.”

Camping became a family tradition — one that evolved with every stage of life. “When I got married, we really started to get out more,” Michael recalled. “We went from a pup tent to a pop-up camper, then to a travel trailer, another trailer, and finally to our first fifth wheel.”

When he and his wife started talking seriously about traveling full-time, Michael wanted to make sure he was prepared. “I didn’t want to damage anything on our fifth wheel,” he said. “It’s a big investment, and I wanted to learn how to maintain it the right way.”

Why NRVTA Was the Right Choice

Michael discovered the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, while researching how to safely maintain his RV systems. “Coming to NRVTA has been one of the best decisions I’ve made,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot about the systems that will help me maintain everything — from water to electrical to HVAC.”

The RV Fundamentals course at NRVTA is designed specifically for RV owners like Michael who want to understand how their rigs work. The program combines classroom learning with live, hands-on labs that let students practice what they’ve learned on real RV components.

“It’s one thing to read about how something works,” Michael said. “But to actually touch the parts, see how they’re connected, and test them yourself — that’s where the real learning happens.”

Overcoming Fear and Building Confidence

Like many RV owners, Michael admits he used to be nervous about tackling electrical issues. “I was afraid to touch some of the components,” he said. “Electricity can be intimidating if you don’t understand it. But here, the instructors make it easy to learn safely.”

Through guided labs and small-group instruction, Michael gained the confidence to troubleshoot and maintain systems on his own. “With the hands-on training I got here, I can actually go in and safely work on my RV,” he said. “It’s given me a huge boost in confidence.”

Helping Others on the Road

Michael’s new skills aren’t just about personal peace of mind — they’re about helping others, too. “One of the things I wanted to do was be able to help people when we’re on the road,” he said. “Now that I understand how the systems work, I can help other RVers when something goes wrong.”

He also sees his training as a long-term investment. “If you’re an RV owner and you’re interested in maintaining your own rig, I highly recommend the NRVTA Fundamentals class,” Michael said. “It gives you so much insight into how your RV works and what to look for before something becomes a big issue.”

Empowering RV Owners Nationwide

The National RV Training Academy — along with the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) — is helping thousands of RV owners like Michael gain independence and confidence through real-world, hands-on education.

Whether you’re a full-timer, a weekend warrior, or considering a mobile repair career, NRVTA provides the tools and training to make you self-reliant on the road.
