From Career Shift to Certified RV Technician - Alan’s Journey at the National RV Training Academy

After spending 25 years in the same career, Alan felt ready for something different. He wanted to pursue a lifestyle that combined meaningful work with the freedom to travel — and after a few years of full-time RVing with his wife, he realized that the RV industry might hold the opportunity he’d been looking for.

“I’ve been in the same profession for a long time,” Alan said. “As we got deeper into full-time RV life, I started looking for something new — something that let me work with my hands and stay mobile.”

That search led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, a nationally recognized school that helps RV owners, technicians, and inspectors gain the skills to maintain, repair, and inspect RVs confidently.

From Career Shift to Certified RV Technician - Alan’s Journey at the National RV Training Academy

Discovering the National RV Training Academy

Alan learned about NRVTA through podcasts, radio programs, and YouTube channels featuring graduates who had turned their training into thriving mobile businesses. “The more I listened, the more I realized that this school was exactly what I needed,” he said. “It’s a place where you can learn real skills that give you options.”

He enrolled in the RV Fundamentals Course, a one-week, hands-on training designed to teach students the essential systems found in every RV — from electrical and propane to plumbing, refrigeration, and air conditioning. After completing Fundamentals, Alan continued through the advanced Certified RV Technician Program, which provides in-depth technical instruction and prepares students for certification through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA).

Learning by Doing

For Alan, the biggest difference between NRVTA and traditional learning environments was the emphasis on hands-on experience.

“The first week was eye-opening,” he said. “You’re not just sitting in a classroom. You’re taking things apart, testing systems, and seeing how everything connects. The instructors are excellent at explaining things in a way that makes sense.”

He also found that the training wasn’t just for those pursuing a new career — it’s equally valuable for full-time RVers who want to be more self-reliant. “If you want to be able to take care of your own rig and fix your own problems while you’re on the road, this is where you need to be,” he said. “You can learn so much in a short time, and the experience gives you real confidence.”

Building a New Kind of Independence

With his training underway, Alan is planning to complete his certification and use his new skills both personally and professionally. “This program gives you options,” he explained. “You can use it to maintain your own RV or start a business helping others. Either way, it gives you freedom.”

The demand for certified RV technicians continues to grow nationwide, as millions of RV owners seek qualified professionals to perform maintenance and repairs. NRVTA graduates are meeting that demand — many launching their own mobile RV service businesses and building flexible, independent careers on the road.

For Alan, NRVTA provided the perfect bridge between his previous career and his next chapter. “If you want to change your career, become self-sufficient, or start working for yourself, one month here can make it happen,” he said.
