From Chef to RV Technician - Jeff’s Hands-On Journey from Canada to the National RV Training Academy

After two decades working as a professional chef, Jeff from Toronto, Canada, was ready to trade the fast-paced kitchen for a life that offered more freedom and adventure.

“I’ve been in business for 20 years,” Jeff shared. “I’ve always loved RVs and have owned a few over the years. Watching videos online, I saw people traveling, working on RVs, and making a living on the road. I thought, maybe it’s time I give that a try.”

That curiosity led Jeff to discover the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas — a school known across North America for its hands-on approach to teaching RV maintenance, repair, and inspection.

Finding a Better Way to Learn

Back home in Canada, Jeff looked into similar programs but quickly realized that most were long, classroom-based courses with very little practical training.

“The same kind of course back home would take about four years,” he said. “It’s mostly in a classroom — no hands-on. I learn best by doing, not by reading out of a book.”

Jeff admits that reading and writing haven’t always come easy to him. “I’m only like a grade one when it comes to reading,” he said with a laugh. “So I told the staff I’d need help with the tests and paperwork.”

What happened next showed him what makes NRVTA different.

“The staff stepped up and went beyond,” Jeff said. “They made sure I understood everything. They didn’t just hand me a manual — they worked with me until it clicked. That meant a lot.”

Hands-On Training That Builds Confidence

At NRVTA, students spend most of their time in workshops, labs, and training bays. From troubleshooting air conditioners to repairing water heaters, every lesson focuses on real-world applications.

“The hands-on training here is amazing,” Jeff said. “You’re not just watching someone else do it. You’re actually working on the equipment yourself. That’s how I learn best.”

By the time he finished the course, Jeff not only understood RV systems — he was confident he could fix them.

A New Life on the Road

Now that he’s certified, Jeff is planning his next adventure.

“I want to move out to British Columbia for the summer — I love being near the ocean,” he said. “Then when the rainy season starts, I’ll head down the West Coast where it’s 70 degrees all the time. I’ll work, travel, and enjoy life.”

That lifestyle — flexible, mobile, and self-sufficient — is exactly what draws many students to NRVTA. Graduates often go on to start mobile RV service businesses, allowing them to earn a living while exploring North America.

“I’ve met so many people here who travel, stay in different places, run their business, and love what they do,” Jeff said. “They’re making an income and enjoying life at the same time. I highly recommend this school.”
