Get your RV Technician Certification in as little as 5 weeks!

Sometimes life’s biggest opportunities show up when you least expect them. For Andrew from Central Illinois, it happened while on vacation in Key West.
He and his wife were staying in a camper listed on Airbnb. “I started asking the host about his camper,” Andrew recalled. “We were looking at getting one ourselves, and he mentioned he was an RV technician who had trained at the National RV Training Academy.”
That single conversation set off a chain reaction that completely changed Andrew’s direction.
A Chance Encounter Sparks a New Path
The host told Andrew about a recent repair job he’d completed and the income he earned from it. “He said he made a few hundred dollars on a small repair—and that was giving the guy a break,” Andrew said. “I remember thinking, come again? How much?”
It got Andrew thinking seriously about the RV technician industry. He learned that trained technicians were in short supply—and that many dealerships were weeks or months behind on repairs. “He told me there just weren’t enough people who knew how to work on these systems,” Andrew said.
When he returned home, Andrew researched the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) and the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA). He even checked the official RVTAA Tech Locator, a map of certified technicians across the country.
“What I saw shocked me,” he said. “There wasn’t a single advanced certified tech anywhere near me. The only registered techs were about 70 miles away—and both were working for dealerships.”
That’s when he realized there was not just an opportunity, but a demand for skilled RV technicians in his region.
Learning from the Best
Andrew decided to enroll in NRVTA’s Advanced Certified RV Technician Program, a five-week, in-depth training that covers all major RV systems—electrical, propane, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, and more.
“Todd Henson—honestly, I doubt there’s another human being on this planet more knowledgeable about RVs,” Andrew said. “He has a way of explaining things that makes everything click.”
During the early days of training, Andrew admits he was out of his comfort zone. “Day one and two were information overload,” he said. “But by day three and four, when we got hands-on with equipment, it all started coming together. Seeing it in person made everything make sense.”
Each week, he grew more confident. The practical labs reinforced the classroom lessons, and by the end of his five weeks, he not only understood RV systems—he felt ready to launch a business of his own.
A Career That Fits
For Andrew, who has worked in education, the idea of switching careers was intimidating. But NRVTA gave him both the technical skills and the business insight to succeed.
“The whole school—the instructors, the setup, the support—it’s been far beyond any expectation I had,” he said. “If I can go through this and do this, anybody can. It’s all clicked, and now I’m ready to get out there and start making money.”
He’s now preparing to start his own mobile RV repair business, providing on-site diagnostics and repair for RV owners who can’t find help at traditional dealerships.
Why NRVTA?
Located in Athens, Texas, the National RV Training Academy is the country’s top hands-on school for RV technicians and inspectors. Students can start with the RV Fundamentals Course or progress through certification programs approved by the RVTAA and National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA).
Each course combines classroom instruction with live lab training on real RV systems. Whether students want to fix their own rigs or start a business, NRVTA provides the confidence and skills to do both.
As Andrew puts it: “You get into days three, four, and five, and the hands-on training brings it all together. Everything you learn starts to make sense.”
The Road Ahead
Now back in Illinois, Andrew’s focused on building his new business, filling a major service gap in his area. “There’s a real need where I live,” he said. “I’m ready to meet it—and have fun doing it.”
He’s proof that it’s never too late to learn something new, start fresh, and find freedom through a hands-on career.
