For BJ Israel, working with his hands has always been second nature. As a licensed electrician, he spent years troubleshooting systems, solving problems, and ensuring that everything worked safely and efficiently. But when he and his wife decided to hit the road and start full-time RVing, BJ realized that his next career move might be sitting right behind the wheel.
“I’ve always worked in the trades,” BJ explained, “so when we started RVing, I immediately began looking for ways to learn more about how these systems actually work. I wanted to understand what I was living in — and how to keep it running.”
That curiosity led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, where he discovered a training program designed not just for technicians, but for people like him — hands-on learners who want to combine skill, freedom, and financial independence.
Learning from the Experts
BJ first heard about the NRVTA through other mobile RV technicians who had trained there. One tech in particular had built a thriving business after completing the academy’s Certified RV Technician Program, and that success caught BJ’s attention.
“Getting an education from people who actually do the work has been huge,” he said. “It’s one thing to watch videos or try to DIY repairs, but it’s completely different to learn directly from experienced instructors who’ve been out in the field.”
At NRVTA, students spend time both in the classroom and in hands-on labs, where they take apart and repair real RV systems. The training covers everything from air conditioning and refrigeration to plumbing, propane, electrical, and solar. “I’ve learned immensely more than I ever would have trying to figure it out the hard way,” BJ said. “The labs made all the difference.”
He credits the NRVTA’s team of instructors, including industry veteran Todd Henson, for creating an environment where complex concepts suddenly make sense. “They don’t just teach theory,” BJ said. “They show you how to apply it — step by step — so when you get out in the field, you know exactly what to do.”
Turning Training into a Career
Armed with new knowledge and certifications, BJ has a clear vision for what comes next: launching his own mobile RV repair business. His goal is to travel the country, meet fellow RVers, and provide reliable repair services wherever he goes.
“My plan is to go full-blown mobile tech,” he said. “I want to travel, help people, and support my family while doing something that I truly enjoy.”
The freedom of being able to work from the road is one of the biggest advantages for NRVTA graduates. Unlike traditional 9-to-5 jobs, certified RV technicians can take their skills anywhere — performing repairs in campgrounds, at dealerships, or right at a customer’s RV site.
With more than 11 million RV owners in the U.S. and a growing shortage of skilled service professionals, the demand for trained technicians and inspectors has never been higher.
About the National RV Training Academy
The National RV Training Academy is the largest hands-on RV training facility in the United States, offering everything from basic RV owner education to career-track certification programs. Located in Athens, Texas, the campus includes classrooms, labs, and an RV park where students can live and learn on-site.
Graduates can earn certifications through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) or the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) — credentials that open doors to self-employment, dealership work, or mobile repair service opportunities.
For many students like BJ, NRVTA provides more than just technical knowledge — it offers a pathway to independence.
A Career That Travels with You
BJ’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to learn something new or change direction. His background as an electrician gave him the foundation, but NRVTA gave him the confidence and certification to take his skills on the road.
“NRVTA really fit what I was looking for,” he said. “I didn’t just want to work — I wanted to build a business that let me travel and meet people. Now I get to do that while helping others keep their RVs running.”
