For Eric Davis, what began as a hobby turned into an exciting new direction for his family’s future. After years of watching Todd Henson’s “Two-Minute Tech Tip Tuesdays” on YouTube, Eric and his wife decided it was finally time to take the next step. They packed up their RV, left home behind, and headed to Athens, Texas, to attend the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) — the country’s premier school for RV technician and inspector training.
Eric had always been fascinated by how RV systems work. Like many full-time RVers, he wanted to be more self-sufficient — to understand his rig, perform his own maintenance, and avoid the long wait times at repair shops. But what started as a desire to simply learn more turned into something much bigger: the foundation of a new mobile RV repair business that will allow him to travel, earn a living, and help other RVers stay on the road.
Learning Beyond the Basics
When Eric first arrived at the NRVTA campus, he wasn’t sure what to expect. “I’d been watching the videos for years,” he said, “but being here in person, seeing how everything worked together — that’s what really clicked for me.”
The Fundamentals Course, NRVTA’s first week of training, covers the core systems of the RV — electrical, water, propane, and appliances. Students like Eric spend the first few days in the classroom learning theory and safety, and then they move into the hands-on labs where they actually disassemble, test, and repair components from real RVs.
For many students, including Eric, the hands-on portion is where confidence begins to grow. “Once I started taking things apart and putting them back together,” he said, “it all made sense. You realize you can fix things yourself.”
About the National RV Training Academy
Located in Athens, Texas, the National RV Training Academy is known as the largest hands-on RV training facility in the United States. The campus is designed for RV owners, aspiring technicians, and future inspectors who want to turn their curiosity into practical skills.
NRVTA’s programs range from short, one-week introduction courses to advanced training for those pursuing certified RV technician or certified RV inspector credentials. The academy partners with the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) to provide nationally recognized certifications that open the door to real career opportunities in the growing RV industry.
Students can even bring their own RVs and live on-site while they learn. It’s an immersive, community-driven experience where students study side-by-side with others who share their love for travel and hands-on work.
The Benefits of Becoming a Certified RV Technician or Inspector
Eric quickly discovered that learning to maintain and repair RVs isn’t just practical — it’s empowering. “When you live full-time in your RV, it’s your home. Knowing how to take care of it gives you independence,” he said.
For those looking to make it a career, the RV industry offers incredible potential. With over 11 million RV owners in the U.S. and a national shortage of trained service professionals, NRVTA graduates are finding success as mobile RV technicians, independent inspectors, and even small business owners.
Certified RV technicians can choose where they work — whether at dealerships, campgrounds, or on the road. Inspectors, meanwhile, help RV buyers make smart purchase decisions by providing detailed evaluations before a sale. Both paths provide flexibility, financial stability, and freedom — a rare combination that appeals to RV enthusiasts nationwide.
A New Chapter on the Road
Eric and his wife are not only more confident RV owners but also entrepreneurs preparing to launch their own mobile RV service business. The experience at NRVTA gave them the tools and mindset to turn their passion for RVing into a meaningful and sustainable lifestyle.
“I think every RVer should take the time to come here,” Eric said. “It’s worth the time and the money. You leave here with a better understanding of how your rig works and what you can fix yourself.”
For Eric, the National RV Training Academy provided more than just an education — it offered a new beginning.
