From Nervous Beginner to Confident RV Troubleshooter - Jim’s Journey at NRVTA

When Jim and his wife decided to leave South Dakota and embrace the freedom of full-time RV living, they knew there would be a learning curve. “My wife has a job she can work remotely,” Jim said. “That gave us the flexibility to travel, but I wanted to make sure I could take care of any problems that came up with our RV.”

Like many new RVers, Jim began researching how to maintain and repair his rig. A simple Google search for RV repair training led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas — and it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for.

Discovering NRVTA

“I started investigating and thought, ‘Hey, this looks like a great program and a great opportunity,’” Jim recalled. “So I decided I was going to enroll and do the whole course. And I’m so thankful that I did.”

At NRVTA, Jim found an encouraging environment designed to help people of all backgrounds gain hands-on skills in RV systems, maintenance, and repair. “The teachers and training assistants here are so wonderful,” he said. “They make sure you understand what you’re doing before you move on to the next thing.”

Hands-On Learning That Builds Confidence

Jim admits that before coming to NRVTA, he wasn’t sure how comfortable he would be working with tools. “When I started, I wasn’t mechanically inclined,” he said. “But since being here, I’ve become more and more familiar and comfortable with using the tools.”

Each week at NRVTA builds on the last — starting with RV Fundamentals, then progressing through specialized training in air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, furnaces, and exterior systems. Students get to work on real components in a live lab environment, diagnosing and repairing problems under the guidance of experienced instructors.

“I would not be comfortable tearing into a refrigerator problem, an air conditioner issue, or a generator repair if it hadn’t been for coming to this school,” Jim said. “The hands-on learning makes all the difference.”

For Anyone Looking for Something New

Jim’s story is one that resonates with many adults looking for a new start — whether it’s a career change or simply the confidence to maintain their own RVs. “If you’re like me, searching for something new to do, and you want to go full-time, I strongly recommend coming to NRVTA,” he said.

The program is designed to work for everyone — from seasoned mechanics to people who have never picked up a wrench. “If you’re afraid you’re not mechanically inclined, trust me,” Jim said. “You’ll be comfortable coming down here and learning the tools. The instructors make sure of it.”

More Than Just a School

The National RV Training Academy isn’t just a classroom — it’s a community. Students support each other, learn together, and leave with both knowledge and confidence. Many go on to start mobile RV repair businesses, become certified through RVTAA or NRVIA, or simply enjoy the peace of mind that comes from understanding their own RV systems.

For Jim, that peace of mind is priceless. “Coming to NRVTA was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” he said. “It’s not just about fixing RVs — it’s about learning something that gives you freedom.”
