After more than two decades in the oil and gas industry, Derek Buster from Argyle, Texas, knew it was time for a change. The long hours, constant travel, and unpredictable lifestyle made him want something more meaningful — something that would allow him to spend more time with his wife, Melissa, and their three children. Together, they decided to turn their passion for RVing into a family business.
Today, the Busters are the proud owners of Over The Road RV Repair, a Texas-licensed mobile RV repair company specializing in liquefied propane systems and general RV maintenance. But before launching their business, Derek and Melissa decided to invest in their education at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas — a decision that changed the course of their lives.
From Full-Time RVing to Full-Time Learning
The Busters had been full-time RVers since July, living and traveling in their 40-foot Winnebago Class A motorhome. Their goal was to build a business they could operate while traveling the country and exploring national parks.
When they met an RV technician in Georgia who was also an NRVTA graduate, everything clicked. Derek started researching the school and was impressed by the success stories of other families who had completed the program. Soon after, both he and Melissa enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals course, the first step toward becoming certified RV technicians.
“The Fundamentals week was an incredible experience,” Derek said. “It gave us a complete understanding of how RV systems work and the confidence to maintain and repair our own rig — and eventually help others do the same.”
Melissa, who completed her Fundamentals training shortly after Derek, said it was empowering to learn a new skill set that fit their lifestyle. “We wanted to be self-sufficient,” she explained. “Being able to fix our own RV and help other travelers just made sense.”
The NRVTA Difference
The National RV Training Academy offers a hands-on, practical approach to education. Located on a 37-acre campus in Athens, Texas, the school attracts students from all over the country — including couples, families, and full-time RVers like the Busters.
Students can live in their RVs on campus while attending courses, creating an immersive experience that blends lifestyle and learning. The Fundamentals Course gives students a solid foundation in electrical, propane, water, and appliance systems, while additional certification programs dive deeper into air conditioners, water heaters, refrigerators, furnaces, and solar power.
Graduates can become certified through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) or the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) — both respected organizations that open doors to career opportunities and business growth nationwide.
NRVTA’s instructors, including Todd Henson, are known for their real-world experience and passion for teaching. They guide students through each lesson with patience, humor, and practical insight — helping them not only learn the material but also apply it effectively in real-world situations.
Turning Knowledge into a Business
After completing their training, Derek and Melissa launched Over The Road RV Repair, a mobile service company dedicated to helping RVers stay safe and comfortable on the road. They carry their tools and parts in a trailer behind their RV, traveling across Texas and beyond to provide on-site repairs for vacationers and fellow full-timers.
Because Derek is licensed in liquefied propane systems, the business can handle everything from appliance installations and leak detection to electrical troubleshooting and maintenance. Their ultimate goal is to build a flexible, family-centered business that allows them to explore new places, homeschool their kids, and meet people from all walks of life.
“This training gave us the foundation to build a business that supports our lifestyle,” Derek said. “We’re not just fixing RVs — we’re helping people keep their homes-on-wheels running.”
Building a Life with Purpose
The Busters’ story is one of transformation — from corporate careers to full-time family entrepreneurs. The National RV Training Academy gave them the skills, confidence, and certification they needed to make it happen.
Whether you’re looking to start a business, gain independence as an RVer, or begin a new career, NRVTA provides the hands-on training and industry support to get you there.
