From Online Learning to Hands-On Confidence: Larry’s Journey from RV Owner to Future Certified Tech

When Larry from Goodyear, Arizona, first started looking for RV repair help online, he didn’t realize it would lead to an entirely new career path.

“I saw Todd on YouTube,” he said, referring to Todd Henson, Lead Instructor at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA). “Something about the way he explained things just made sense. I was looking for information on how to repair my own RV, and that video led me to the NRVTA Home Study Course.”

Starting with the Home Study Course

Like thousands of other RV owners, Larry began his journey with the RV Owners Home Study Course — a comprehensive, self-paced program designed to teach the fundamentals of RV maintenance and repair.

“About two years ago, I took the home study course,” Larry said. “It gave me a solid foundation to start understanding my RV — what systems did what, how to troubleshoot, and where to start when something didn’t work.”

The course, created by NRVTA and taught by certified instructors, covers everything from electrical safety and water systems to propane, heating, and air conditioning.

Taking the Next Step: Hands-On Learning at NRVTA

But Larry wanted to go further.

“I finally made it here,” he said. “I’m in the Fundamentals class right now, and I chose this mainly because of the hands-on training. That’s where I learn best.”

At NRVTA’s Big Red Schoolhouse in Athens, Texas, students get direct experience with real RV components — air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, and electrical systems.

“Learning how to use the meter, learning what to look for in water tanks, air conditioners, and heaters — it’s been wonderful,” Larry explained. “I even got to dive into Ohm’s Law, and now it all makes sense because I can see it in action.”

A Pathway to a New Career

Larry isn’t stopping with Fundamentals. His goal is to return in the spring to complete RV Inspector training through NRVIA, followed by advanced technician courses through RVTAA, ultimately becoming a Certified RV Technician and starting his own mobile business.

“The people here at NRVTA have been so accommodating and helpful,” he said. “I can’t recommend this place enough.”

For Larry, what began as a curiosity about maintaining his RV evolved into a plan for a new chapter of life — one filled with flexibility, independence, and purpose.

Why Hands-On Training Matters

Many RV owners start with online research or DIY repair attempts. What sets NRVTA apart is the bridge between theory and practice — transforming everyday RVers into confident, capable problem-solvers.

Larry’s journey is proof that with the right training, anyone can move from uncertainty to confidence — and from learning online to thriving in the field.

“If this is something you want to do,” Larry said, “or even if you just want to work on your own rig, check out the NRVTA. You’ll have a great experience.”
