From Paying for Repairs to Doing It Himself - Rodney’s Hands-On RV Training Experience at NRVTA

When Rodney from Houston, Texas, bought his RV, he loved the freedom that came with it — but he didn’t love how much he was spending on repairs.

“I had no experience with multimeters, no background in electricity,” Rodney said. “Every time something broke, I was at the mercy of a service center. I was spending so much money fixing or having my RV fixed, and I started to wonder if I was really getting what I was paying for.”

That curiosity — and frustration — led him to discover the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, a school dedicated to helping RV owners and aspiring technicians learn how to repair and maintain RVs the right way.

Meeting ‘The Beard’ and Finding Confidence

Rodney admits he was nervous at first. “I had no clue what I was getting into,” he said. “But then I met Todd Henson — ‘The Beard.’ That first week changed everything. He made learning fun and approachable. He took something I was intimidated by — electricity — and made it make sense.”

Todd’s teaching style and the hands-on nature of the NRVTA classes gave Rodney the confidence he needed.

“Instead of just sitting in a classroom, we were actually troubleshooting systems, using tools, and learning by doing,” he explained. “That kind of training sticks with you.”

Discovering What’s Really Behind the Repairs

After completing the five-week RV technician training and the inspection courses, Rodney had a revelation.

“Now that I know how these systems work, I can see that what I was paying for before wasn’t what I was actually receiving,” he said. “I realized how much knowledge makes a difference. When you understand what’s going on behind the walls of your RV, you’re no longer guessing — and you can make sure the job gets done right.”

That realization inspired Rodney and his family to share their knowledge and help others.

“We came to this school so we could help other RVers who were in the same situation — frustrated, waiting for repairs, and spending money without knowing what they were getting,” Rodney said. “Now we can give people real help and real answers.”

Hands-On Learning that Builds Real Skills

Rodney said the NRVTA program exceeded his expectations because it didn’t just teach the “what” — it taught the “why.”

“Every system we worked on — from air conditioners to refrigerators — we got to take apart, test, and rebuild,” he explained. “When you physically see how it all connects, it just clicks.”

He believes every RV owner should take at least one NRVTA course, even if they don’t plan to become a technician.

“I would recommend this school to anyone who wants to learn how an RV works,” he said. “It’s worth every minute.”

A Journey from Uncertainty to Empowerment

Today, Rodney not only understands his own RV — he’s helping others who once felt the same way.

“I came here to stop depending on others for my repairs,” he said. “But I left with so much more. I left with confidence, community, and the ability to help people just like me.”
