From Renovating to a New Career - Mike’s Journey to Becoming a Certified RV Technician at the NRVTA

For Mike of British Columbia, life used to be all about long hours and little rest. After years in a demanding job with no real breaks, he and his wife decided it was time for a complete change. They sold everything, bought a camper, and set out to travel for a year.

That single decision ended up changing his career—and his life.

“My wife wasn’t happy with how our camper was set up,” Mike said. “So we gutted it and renovated the whole thing. I realized I really enjoyed the work, and it got me thinking: how do all these systems actually work?”

A New Curiosity Sparks a New Direction

Once the renovation was complete, Mike wanted to dig deeper. “I’d owned ten trailers over the years,” he explained, “but honestly, all I really knew was how to plug them in.” When his wife discovered a Changing Lanes episode featuring the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA), she encouraged him to check it out.

At first, Mike hesitated. “Who wants to go back to school after all these years?” he laughed. But after researching the RV industry and talking to local dealerships, he realized there was a serious shortage of trained technicians.

“No one in my area was certified,” he said. “One guy knew how to do a few things, another guy handled a few others—but no one really understood the full system. That’s when I knew there was a need and an opportunity.”

Discovering the National RV Training Academy

Mike enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals Course, the first step toward becoming a Certified RV Technician through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA). The week-long class provides hands-on instruction covering every essential system: electrical, plumbing, propane, appliances, and air conditioning.

“I went in green,” Mike admitted. “But within days, I was learning things that completely changed how I look at an RV. Even small details surprised me. The instructors explain everything clearly, and the hands-on labs make it stick.”

Encouraged by the progress, Mike committed to the full certification program. “I’m excited for the next four weeks,” he said. “Each class dives deeper—refrigeration, air conditioning, all of it. It’s exactly what I was looking for.”

Bringing Knowledge—and Confidence—Back Home

Mike plans to return to British Columbia and launch his own RV-repair business. “There’s such a big need for trained technicians,” he said. “I want to help people, not just fix their rigs but teach them how they work. Most owners don’t realize what’s happening behind the panels. I can change that.”

For him, NRVTA provided not only technical expertise but also the confidence to turn a passion into a profession. “I’ve done a lot of jobs in my life, but this is something I can really enjoy,” he added. “It feels good to build something for myself.”
