When Doug and Melanie from Blue Ridge, Georgia bought their first RV, excitement quickly turned into confusion. “We looked at it and thought it was like an alien spaceship,” Doug laughed. “We had no idea what we were looking at or how anything worked.”
Like most new RV owners, they turned to YouTube for help. That’s when they discovered Todd’s Tech Tip Tuesday, a weekly video series by Todd Henson of the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA).
“Out of all the videos we watched, Todd’s made the most sense,” Melanie said. “It was clear, easy to follow, and actually explained how things worked. That’s when we looked into the NRVTA and decided we needed to go see it for ourselves.”
Discovering the National RV Training Academy
Located in Athens, Texas, the National RV Training Academy is widely recognized as the country’s premier hands-on school for RV technicians and inspectors. Students from across North America attend the academy to learn how to repair, maintain, and inspect RVs.
The couple enrolled in NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals Course, a one-week class that covers every major RV system—electrical, propane, water heaters, air conditioning, and more.
“Our experience here has been nothing short of amazing,” Doug said. “The amount of hands-on training is key for me. I’m not a book guy—I need to work with my hands, and this program gave us that opportunity.”
By the end of their first week, both Doug and Melanie felt transformed. “We came here with nothing—no knowledge of RVs or how to work on them,” Melanie said. “Now, we feel confident we can make a living doing this.”
A Future Built on Skills and Teamwork
Doug and Melanie now plan to return to their home in North Georgia to start their own mobile RV service business. Their goal is to offer a full range of services, including RV inspections, solar installations, generator repairs, and maintenance.
“Everything we’ve learned here applies to what we want to do,” Doug said. “The instructors made sure we didn’t just understand the systems, but also how to troubleshoot and fix them in the real world.”
For Melanie, the journey has been as much about teamwork as it has been about career growth. “We’re doing this together,” she said. “It’s something we can both be proud of and something we can build as a team.”
Why NRVTA Works
What sets NRVTA apart from other training options is its hands-on, practical approach. Students work directly on RVs, guided by instructors who have real-world experience in the field.
“The learning environment is incredible,” Doug said. “It’s not just theory—you’re fixing things, testing systems, and understanding how it all connects. Every day you leave class smarter than you were when you started.”
The couple said the support and encouragement from instructors gave them the confidence to take the next step. “They don’t just teach you—they make sure you’re ready to go out there and succeed,” Melanie added.
A Message to Future Students
Doug has some advice for anyone considering the National RV Training Academy: “If you’re on the fence, take the leap. Do it. The knowledge you’ll walk away with is worth every bit of time and effort. You’ll leave here with the confidence to take on anything.”
For Doug and Melanie, NRVTA wasn’t just a school—it was a turning point. “We started this journey not knowing anything about RVs,” Doug said. “Now we’re ready to go home and start our own business. It’s been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.”
