From RV Inspector to Certified Technician | How Dana Hex Built Empower RV

For Dana Hext, founder of Empower RV, what began as a simple love of camping and travel grew into a full-fledged mission — to help others gain independence and confidence in the RV lifestyle. Based near Houston, Texas, Dana serves RV owners across the Woodlands, Conroe, and Montgomery areas, teaching them how to understand, maintain, and even repair their RVs. But her story starts at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, where she first discovered how education could transform not only her own life but the lives of those she now teaches.

Discovering a New Path

Dana had always been drawn to the outdoors and the freedom of life on the road. With a family who loved to travel and explore, she wanted a career that aligned with both her adventurous spirit and her desire for financial independence. When she learned about the National RV Training Academy, she realized it offered exactly what she was looking for — a way to turn her interests into something meaningful and sustainable.

She enrolled in the RV Inspector Training Program, beginning with RV Fundamentals followed by two weeks of Inspector Certification courses. The hands-on structure and industry-leading curriculum gave her an immediate sense of confidence. “I wanted to do something that combined what I love with something that could bring in an income,” Dana said. “Coming to NRVTA was the best decision I could have made.”

After just a few months, Dana completed her NRVIA Certified RV Inspector training and began inspecting RVs professionally. For nearly eight months, she helped RV buyers make informed purchasing decisions while building her own business, Empower RV, from the ground up. But she wasn’t done learning yet.

Continuing the Journey

In January 2022, Dana returned to Athens to continue her training — this time to become a Certified RV Technician through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA).

Because she was still balancing work and family, Dana took one course at a time, completing each specialized system module every six to eight weeks. “It took me about six months to finish everything,” she said. “Some people do it all at once, but I liked spacing it out so I could go home, practice what I learned, and come back ready for more.”

Each course covered a specific system — from refrigeration, air conditioning, and water heaters to electrical, solar, and propane — giving her the skills to confidently diagnose and repair issues on her own and for others. The hands-on training and real-world instruction gave her a complete understanding of how RVs operate and how to teach those concepts to others.

About the National RV Training Academy

The National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) is America’s largest hands-on RV training facility, located in Athens, Texas. The academy offers both short-term owner education programs and advanced career training for those pursuing certification as RV technicians or inspectors.

Students come from across the country — some looking to maintain their own RVs, others hoping to start new careers or small businesses. The academy’s on-site RV park allows students to live where they learn, and its partnership with RVTAA and NRVIA ensures graduates receive nationally recognized certifications that open doors to business ownership and employment opportunities.

With over 11 million RV owners in the U.S. and a growing demand for qualified technicians and inspectors, NRVTA graduates like Dana are helping fill a critical need in the industry.

Empowering Others Through Education

Today, Dana uses her experience as both a teacher and certified technician to help others — especially women — learn to take control of their RV experience. Through Empower RV, she travels across the country teaching women how to perform basic maintenance, understand solar systems, and complete their own pre-purchase inspections.

Her goal is to make RV ownership less intimidating and more empowering. “I love helping people see that they can do this,” Dana said. “You don’t have to rely on someone else every time something breaks. With the right training, you can handle so much on your own.”

A Career That Fits Her Life

For Dana, what started as a personal goal turned into a mission to empower others. The National RV Training Academy didn’t just teach her how to fix RVs — it gave her a platform to teach others how to take charge of their own journeys.

“NRVTA opened doors into the RV industry that I never thought possible,” Dana said. “Now I get to combine what I love with helping others, and that’s something truly special.”
