From RV Newbie to Future Business Owner

When Shannon first heard about the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA), she wasn’t sure what to expect. She and her husband Chris, an experienced electrician, had talked about getting into the RV world, but Shannon was the first to take action. Her inspiration came from close to home — her sister and brother-in-law had completed the NRVTA program the previous year and couldn’t stop talking about how life-changing it was.

“They just couldn’t say enough good things about it,” Shannon said. “My sister told me, ‘You have to do this. This is something I can really see you doing.’”

Encouraged by their success, Shannon decided to enroll — bringing Chris along for moral support.

Learning as a Complete Newcomer

Shannon describes herself as a true beginner. “I’m a newbie,” she said. “I’ve never been in an RV before this. My husband has lived in them before, but I hadn’t even stepped into one until recently.”

Despite that, Shannon dove into the RV Fundamentals Course at NRVTA with enthusiasm. The week-long program introduces students to the essential systems that make up every RV — electrical, propane, water, and refrigeration — and teaches how to diagnose and repair common issues.

“I was nervous at first,” she admitted, “but once class started, I became a sponge. I’m absorbing everything. I want to learn more.”

By the end of the week, Shannon wasn’t just more confident — she was hooked. “I’m 100% coming back for more classes as soon as we can agree on the dates,” she said. “If you’ve ever even thought about doing this, do it. They have such great information.”

A Supportive Environment for Every Level

At NRVTA, students come from all backgrounds — from electricians and engineers to complete beginners like Shannon. The instructors break down each concept step-by-step, using hands-on labs and real-world demonstrations that make complex systems easy to understand.

“The instructors are incredible at helping everyone, no matter your experience level,” Shannon said. “You don’t feel out of place if you’ve never done this before.”

That inclusive learning environment helped Shannon discover a sense of empowerment she hadn’t expected. “I’ve learned so much just about my own RV,” she said. “Not just how to work on RVs, but how everything functions. I feel like I finally understand what I’m living in.”

From Classroom to Business

For Shannon and Chris, the goal is more than just education — it’s about launching a new chapter. Together, they plan to start a mobile RV repair business after completing the technician and inspector certification programs.

“Chris is an electrician, so he already brings technical skills,” Shannon said. “But I wanted to learn this for myself. We’re going to open a business and take it on the road.”

With the growing demand for qualified RV technicians and inspectors, the timing couldn’t be better. More than 11 million RV owners across the U.S. are searching for reliable service professionals, and NRVTA graduates are stepping in to meet that need.

About the National RV Training Academy

For Shannon, this is just the beginning. What started as curiosity has turned into a passion and a new career path. “I’ve learned so much and can’t wait to come back,” she said. “This experience has been incredible.”
