From RV Newbies to Confident Owners - The Wayward Wags’ Hands-On Journey at NRVTA

Dustin and Wesley — known to thousands of YouTube followers as The Wayward Wags — have spent the past four years traveling the country full-time in their RV, sharing adventures and connecting with the RV community. But as seasoned travelers, they realized something was missing: a deeper understanding of how their RV actually worked.

“We didn’t know anything about how RVs worked,” Dustin admitted. “We just knew how to live in one.”

That’s what brought them to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, where RV owners and future technicians learn the ins and outs of every major system — hands-on.

Why Hands-On Training Matters

For Dustin, learning by doing was non-negotiable. “I’m a visual learner,” he explained. “I need to see how things work, touch them, and then do them over and over again until it sticks.”

Wesley, on the other hand, prefers the classroom setting. “I understand things faster when they’re explained,” she said. “So for me, the lectures made everything click — and then watching him do the hands-on part made it all come together.”

At NRVTA, both learning styles come together perfectly. Students spend part of each day in the classroom learning theory and then move directly into live labs, where they troubleshoot real equipment.

“It’s not just theory here,” Dustin said. “You actually work on air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators — real RV systems. You take them apart, test them, and fix them. That’s how you really learn.”

Confidence That Lasts Beyond the Classroom

For the couple, the experience was more than just educational — it was empowering. “We came here to learn how to fix our own rig,” Wesley said, “but what we got was confidence.”

The confidence wasn’t just for themselves. After seeing NRVTA’s training in person, they now look at the RV industry differently.

“When we call for a repair and the tech says, ‘I trained at NRVTA,’ I know we’re in good hands,” Dustin said. “I’ve seen the training firsthand. I know they’re qualified, they have the tools, and they were taught the right way. That’s a huge comfort.”

From YouTube to Real-World Expertise

With a loyal YouTube following, The Wayward Wags are used to sharing their journey with others — but this time, they wanted to share something more practical.

“If you’re thinking about getting into the RV world, or even if you’ve been RVing for years, this school is worth it,” Wesley said. “You’ll walk away with knowledge that saves you time, money, and stress on the road.”

For Dustin, it’s simple: “This place changes the way you think about your RV. It gives you control.”

A School That Builds Trust

The couple’s experience is exactly what NRVTA was designed for — empowering RV owners and training future professionals to keep America on the road.

“Now when I hear someone say they graduated from NRVTA,” Dustin said, “I know they’re good. They’ve had real training, real tools, and real experience.”

Whether you’re an RVer wanting to understand your rig, or someone ready to start a career helping others, the Wayward Wags’ story proves that NRVTA gives you the skills — and the confidence — to make it happen.
