For more than 20 years, Mike built his life around serving others. When he retired, he wasn’t looking to slow down — he was looking for a new purpose.
“My wife and I sold our house in Florida and became full-time RVers,” Mike said. “As we traveled, we met so many people who were having issues with their RVs — air conditioners, slideouts, electrical problems — and couldn’t find anyone to fix them. Some were waiting months for service. That’s when my wife said, ‘This is a great opportunity. We can help people while we travel.’”
That thought planted the seed for a brand-new career — one that would allow them to combine freedom, travel, and service.
Discovering NRVTA
When Mike started researching how to get the proper training, he found the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.
“I was thrilled to find a school that teaches you how to work on RVs from the ground up,” he said. “Once I realized I could enroll in the full program — from fundamentals to advanced service technician and inspector courses — I was all in.”
Mike describes his time at NRVTA as “five of the most hands-on, educational, and eye-opening weeks” of his life.
“There was so much hands-on work,” he explained. “You’re out there using the tools, diagnosing real systems, getting dirty, and learning every component inside and out. You don’t just watch someone do it — you do it.”
From Learning to Launching a Business
After graduation, Mike felt equipped not only to maintain his own RV but also to start a business helping others.
“I’m taking everything I learned here — from electrical systems to water heaters, from generators to inspections — and turning it into a real business,” he said. “I can’t wait to help RV owners who just need honest, timely service.”
He credits the instructors at NRVTA for making the complex world of RV systems easy to understand.
“They’re fantastic,” he said. “They don’t just teach you how things work — they teach you why they work that way, and how to troubleshoot confidently. They’re approachable, patient, and genuinely care about your success.”
A New Mission: Helping Others on the Road
Mike says this new chapter brings him the same fulfillment he found in his previous career.
“I’ve spent my life helping people, and that hasn’t changed,” he said. “Now I get to help fellow RVers stay safe, comfortable, and confident on their adventures.”
He encourages anyone searching for a meaningful next step to look into NRVTA’s programs.
“If you want a career that gives you freedom, travel, and purpose — this is it,” Mike said. “The education you get here changes everything.”
