When Ray from New Era, Michigan first started watching Todd’s Two Minute Tech Tip Tuesdays on YouTube, he didn’t realize it would eventually lead to a complete career change. What began as a curiosity about RV maintenance quickly turned into a new passion — and a plan for the future.
“I was watching Todd’s Tech Tip Tuesdays and started researching the National RV Training Academy,” Ray said. “When I found out they offered a home study course, I decided to take it.”
That online program gave him a solid foundation in understanding how RV systems work — from electrical and plumbing to propane and refrigeration. But Ray wanted more than just knowledge; he wanted the confidence and certification to turn it into a business.
From Online Learning to Hands-On Experience
After completing the RV Home Study Course, Ray decided to travel to Athens, Texas, to attend the National RV Training Academy in person. NRVTA offers both hands-on courses and certification paths through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA), giving students the opportunity to build real skills and earn nationally recognized credentials.
“My experience so far has been great,” Ray said. “I was pretty nervous the first few days of class, but it’s slowly but surely coming together.”
That’s a common feeling among new students. The NRVTA Fundamentals course introduces students to the major systems found in RVs, and through hands-on labs, they learn not only how to diagnose and repair issues but also how to communicate with customers and run their own mobile service business.
Building Confidence Through Training
The Fundamentals Course is designed to help students like Ray gain a strong understanding of RV systems. Each week focuses on a specific topic — electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, furnaces, water heaters, and solar. The combination of classroom instruction and lab-based learning ensures that every student leaves with practical, real-world experience.
Ray especially appreciated how approachable the instructors were. “The teachers made things easy to understand,” he said. “Each day, I felt more confident. It’s all starting to click.”
By the end of his training, Ray was no longer nervous. He was ready. “I’ll take what I learned back home, start a business, and make lots of money,” he said with a smile.
The Growing Demand for RV Technicians and Inspectors
With over 11 million RV owners in the U.S., the demand for qualified RV service professionals has never been higher. Many RV dealerships and repair centers are booked out for months, and mobile RV technicians are becoming the preferred solution for on-site service and inspection.
Graduates from NRVTA are filling that gap, building their own mobile businesses and serving the growing community of RV owners nationwide. Certified RV Inspectors help buyers avoid costly mistakes, while Certified RV Technicians handle everything from troubleshooting appliances to performing preventive maintenance.

Turning Knowledge Into Opportunity
For Ray Hildebrandt, what started as curiosity turned into a clear career path. “It’s been a great experience,” he said. “I learned so much and met incredible people. I can’t wait to take what I’ve learned home and start helping RV owners while building my business.”
If you’ve ever wanted to work with your hands, travel freely, and start your own business, the National RV Training Academy provides the education, tools, and support to make it happen.
