For Carrie Silverhorn, known affectionately by her Shawnee name “Sassy MC”, the RV lifestyle began as a way to explore freedom and self-reliance. What started as a work-camping adventure quickly turned into a life-changing journey — one that led her to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, where she found both a career and a calling.

Carrie, a proud member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, had been a full-time RVer for about two years, traveling across the country and working seasonal jobs. She loved the independence of life on the road but struggled to find consistent work during the winter months. One day, while talking to other travelers at a campground, she kept hearing the same thing — there just weren’t enough qualified RV technicians available.

“I had people come up and ask if there were any RV techs around,” Carrie said. “I took that as a sign. If people were constantly looking for help, maybe that’s something I could do.”

From Camper Troubles to a Career Path

Like many RVers, Carrie had her share of breakdowns along the way. Her 1984 vintage camper needed work, but finding someone willing to repair it was difficult. “I would ask for help, and people would tell me to just sell it or set it on fire,” she said with a laugh. “No one wanted to work on older RVs. That’s when I realized there was a need — especially for someone patient enough to help others like me.”

She also noticed that many solo women travelers — a growing community within the RV world — felt uncomfortable inviting strangers into their RVs for repairs. Carrie understood that fear and wanted to be part of the solution. “If I could show up, another woman, who knows what she’s doing and can explain what’s wrong, that makes a huge difference,” she explained.

A Scholarship and a New Beginning

After meeting an NRVTA graduate at a campground, Carrie decided to look into the school. The more she learned, the more it felt like the right path. She presented the NRVTA’s technician training program to her tribe as a vocational education opportunity — and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe awarded her a full scholarship to attend.

“It was such a blessing,” she said. “My tribe saw it as a way to build a sustainable skill that I could use to help others and support myself.”

The first week at NRVTA, called RV Fundamentals, was challenging but rewarding. “It was like learning a new language,” Carrie said. “There’s so much information, but by the end of the week, things started to click. I was actually going back to my camper, opening up panels, and recognizing parts we had just learned about in class.”

Each following course focused on a single system — refrigeration, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioning, solar power — allowing her to dive deeper into each subject and apply what she learned right away. “The hands-on labs were amazing,” she said. “You’re not just listening to someone talk — you’re actually fixing things.”

Empowering Others Through Knowledge

Now on her way to becoming both a Certified RV Technician and an RV Inspector, Carrie’s goals go beyond fixing RVs. She plans to combine her new skills with her passion for education and community outreach.

“I want to help other women travelers feel confident about their RVs,” she said. “And I also want to educate RV buyers — especially when they’re purchasing used or vintage models — so they know what to look for and don’t get taken advantage of.”

Her long-term goal is to restore and resell vintage RVs, using her inspection training to ensure they’re safe and functional. “I want to make sure people are getting the best deal possible,” she added.

About the National RV Training Academy

The National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas, is the leading hands-on school for those seeking careers in RV repair, maintenance, and inspection. Students from across the country come to train under experienced instructors like Todd Henson, learning through real-world labs and practical lessons.

Graduates earn industry-recognized certifications through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA). These credentials allow students to start their own businesses, travel full-time, or work with dealerships and manufacturers.

With over 11 million RVs on the road in the U.S., there’s never been a greater demand for skilled, certified professionals — and Carrie’s story is proof of how accessible that opportunity can be.

A Journey of Purpose and Pride

Looking back, Carrie is grateful for every twist in her journey — from her first breakdown to her full scholarship and certification. “The NRVTA gave me the knowledge and the confidence to take control of my life,” she said. “Now I get to help others do the same.”

Or as she would say in her Shawnee language: “Salanokina” — until we meet again.
