For Jim Kasikoff and his wife, the dream of owning an RV became reality in April when they purchased their first rig near their home in Boston, Massachusetts. Like most new owners, they quickly discovered that RV maintenance isn’t always simple—and waiting months for a shop appointment wasn’t appealing.
“We figured, hey, this is a good idea—we’ll be able to fix our own RV instead of waiting months for something to be done in a shop,” Jim said.
Their search for knowledge led them first to YouTube tutorials and Facebook RV groups, where they learned the basics of ownership. But Jim wanted a deeper understanding. When he stumbled upon the National RV Training Academy’s Home Study Course, he saw the perfect next step. “I thought, we’ll start with the course and then come to the class later,” he explained.
Learning Through the NRVTA Home Study Course
The Home Study Course from NRVTA allows RV owners to learn at their own pace, from anywhere, with detailed video instruction on electrical, water, propane, and appliance systems. It’s designed for people who want the confidence to troubleshoot their own RVs or prepare for certification training later on.
For Jim, it was exactly what he needed to build a foundation. “It helped me understand how all the systems work together,” he said. “Once I finished that, I knew I wanted to take the in-person class.”
Taking the Next Step in Athens, Texas
Jim traveled to the NRVTA campus in Athens, Texas, for the RV Fundamentals Course, a week-long immersive program taught by industry professionals. There, he met other RV owners and future technicians from across the country, all eager to get hands-on experience.
“The class was incredible,” Jim said. “All of Todd’s jokes made it a fun time and a great learning experience.”
Instructor Todd Henson is known for blending humor with deep technical insight, keeping classes engaging while teaching complex systems like electrical troubleshooting and propane safety.
By the end of the week, Jim left with new confidence in his ability to handle maintenance, inspections, and everyday RV challenges.
On the Path to Certification
Jim’s next goal is to become a Certified RV Inspector through the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA)—a certification that allows professionals to inspect RVs for buyers and sellers. He also plans to return for additional training to earn certification as an RV Technician through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA).
“I started this just wanting to learn how to take care of my own RV,” Jim said. “Now I’m realizing it could become something more—a career or side business.”
Why NRVTA Stands Out
The National RV Training Academy is the country’s largest hands-on training facility for RV technicians, inspectors, and owners. Located on a 37-acre campus in Athens, it offers classrooms, labs, and an RV park where students live and learn simultaneously.
Each course combines classroom theory with real-world practice, helping students gain the confidence to perform maintenance, diagnose problems, and even start businesses of their own.
For Jim, that experience has already paid off. “I highly recommend it to anyone,” he said. “The instructors make it easy to understand, and you leave feeling confident that you can handle your own RV.”
