For Perry Thomas, life on the road has never just been about travel — it’s been about freedom, learning, and connection. A full-time RVer since 2012, Perry has spent more than a decade exploring the country with his home on wheels. But when he decided to turn his experience into a profession, he found exactly what he was looking for at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.
Learning the Fundamentals
Perry first heard about NRVTA through his cousin, who encouraged him to look into the academy’s hands-on training programs. “I went through the RV Fundamentals course and had an amazing time,” Perry said. “It was like drinking water from a fire hydrant — the information came fast and furious — but it was incredible.”
The Fundamentals Course is where every NRVTA journey begins. It’s a one-week program designed to teach students how to understand and troubleshoot key RV systems, including electrical, plumbing, propane, and appliances. The course is ideal for both RV owners who want to maintain their own rigs and for future technicians or inspectors seeking a new career path.
Perry quickly realized that the course was about more than technical training — it was about gaining confidence. “You start to understand how everything connects,” he explained. “Once you do, it’s empowering. You’re no longer guessing — you know exactly what’s going on with your RV.”
Choosing the Certified Inspector Track
Encouraged by his experience in Fundamentals, Perry decided to take his education to the next level by enrolling in the Certified RV Inspector Program.
Offered through the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) in partnership with NRVTA, the program prepares students to perform professional pre-purchase inspections on motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers.
“I went through the inspector course, and it was absolutely amazing,” Perry said. “We got hands-on experience with different types of rigs and learned how to evaluate everything from roof seals to electrical systems.”
The training gave him not just the knowledge to identify potential issues but also the business tools to start earning immediately. “I’m fully equipped,” Perry said. “I learned so much about so many different rigs that I have no concerns about getting work. I know I’ll more than make what I want as a result of taking this class.”
About the National RV Training Academy
The National RV Training Academy is the country’s largest hands-on training facility for RV owners, technicians, and inspectors. Located in Athens, Texas, it features classrooms, workshops, and a full-service RV park where students can live and learn on-site.
NRVTA’s courses are led by experienced instructors, including Todd Henson, who are known for their ability to break down complex systems into practical lessons. The academy’s certifications are recognized nationwide through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA).
Graduates often go on to launch mobile businesses, work with dealerships, or operate independently — serving the millions of RV owners across the U.S.
A New Career on the Road
For Perry, the training was about more than earning a certification — it was about aligning his skills with his lifestyle. As a lifelong traveler, becoming a Certified RV Inspector gives him the flexibility to work from anywhere while helping others avoid costly surprises when buying an RV.
“I couldn’t be more excited to get out there and start working,” Perry said. “This training gave me the confidence and the tools I need to succeed.”
With the growing demand for certified inspectors and technicians nationwide, Perry joins a community of NRVTA graduates who are shaping the future of RV service and inspection.
Turning Passion Into Purpose
Perry’s story is a perfect example of how the National RV Training Academy helps RVers turn their experience into expertise. What began as a simple desire to learn more about his RV evolved into a new career that allows him to travel, work, and make a difference.
