How NRVTA Helped Shawn Build Confidence and a New Career Through Hands-On RV Training

For Shawn from Columbia, South Carolina, the idea of going back to school was intimidating.

“Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, I was afraid of sitting through long lectures or endless slideshows,” Shawn said. “Traditional classrooms never worked for me — I learn best by doing.”

When Shawn discovered the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, he found something completely different: a school built around real-world learning and hands-on experience.

Shawn had always been drawn to fixing things and helping others — two passions that naturally fit into the RV technician lifestyle.

With a background that included troubleshooting and teaching others, Shawn quickly saw how his skills could translate into a meaningful new career.

Learning by Doing — Not Just Watching

From his first week in the Fundamentals course, Shawn realized that NRVTA’s approach was unlike any other school he had experienced.

“I really loved how there wasn’t a single day where we just sat and watched slides,” he said. “Every day we were hands-on, taking things apart, testing components, and applying what we learned.”

He went on to complete advanced courses in Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps, Refrigeration, Water Heaters, and RV Exterior Systems.

“The amount of troubleshooting we got to do was amazing,” Shawn said. “You get to work on hundreds of real-world issues while you’re here. It’s not hypothetical — it’s the same stuff you’ll face out in the field.”

Building a Future in the RV Industry

Now that Shawn has completed his courses, he’s excited to start working as a certified RV technician. The combination of theory, repetition, and mentorship gave him the confidence to step into a new career with certainty.
