How Steve Used His Education Benefits to Launch a New Career at the National RV Training Academy

Two years ago, a friend told him about a school in Athens, Texas, where people could become certified in RV repair and inspection. It sounded like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start.

“I gave them a call and told them that I’m a veteran,” he said. “It would be great if I could use some of my education benefits from the military to come here and go to school.”

That school was the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) — and what started as a hopeful inquiry turned into a life-changing opportunity.

A New Chapter Through Education

After working with NRVTA for two years as they finalized their approval with the Texas Veterans Commission and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the call finally came.

“I got the call that we got it,” he said. “They told me, ‘Let’s get you signed up,’ and I said, ‘Perfect.’”

That call meant that NRVTA was now an officially VA-approved trade school, allowing eligible veterans to use their GI Bill education benefits to cover the cost of tuition, books, and training.

Hands-On Training for Real-World Success

Once he arrived in Athens, the experience exceeded expectations.

“I’ve grown even more skill sets with the hands-on training they provide,” he said. “It’s helped me become even more confident in starting my own business.”

The RV Fundamentals Course gives students a deep understanding of every major RV system — electrical, propane, water heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, and more.

From there, students can advance into specialty training or certification programs through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA).

Building a Business — and a Future

For this veteran, the training wasn’t just about learning to fix RVs. It was about building something of his own.

“It completely changed my path of where I wanted to be,” he said. “I was down here immediately after getting the call. Now, I feel confident and prepared to start my own business.”

Graduates from NRVTA often start mobile RV service companies, traveling across the country to help RV owners with on-site repairs and inspections. For many veterans, that combination of freedom, structure, and purpose feels like a natural next step after military life.

A Message to Other Veterans

His message to other veterans is clear:

“If you’re looking for a new career that lets you be independent, hands-on, and in control of your future, this is it. The fact that you can use your education benefits to cover it makes it even better.”

The NRVTA Commitment to Veterans

The National RV Training Academy is proud to serve veterans by providing VA-approved training programs that help them transition into meaningful careers in the RV industry.

With a campus located at the Texan RV Park in Athens, Texas, NRVTA offers both classroom instruction and real-world lab environments — designed to build the confidence and skill veterans need to succeed in civilian life.

Whether you’re looking to work independently, join a dealership, or become an inspector, NRVTA’s programs provide the foundation for long-term success.
