For Tim, camping has always been part of life. “I’ve been camping since I was a child with my parents up in Wisconsin,” he said. “Now that I’m older, I wanted to share that experience with my own family — but I also wanted to understand my RV better.”
Like many RV owners, Tim had experienced the frustration of being stuck waiting for repairs. “I had my camper out of commission for over a month once,” he recalled. “I didn’t know what was wrong, and I couldn’t depend on anyone to fix it quickly. That’s when I realized — I need to learn how to do this myself.”
Finding the Right Place to Learn
Tim discovered the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) while watching videos online. “I saw Cooper, the founder, explaining how there are thousands of RV parks across the U.S. — and millions of RV owners — but such a small number of certified technicians available to service them,” he said. “That really stuck with me.”
The numbers made sense — and the opportunity was clear. “I knew based on my own experience that the need was there,” Tim said. “When I looked into NRVTA more, I realized this was the place to go. They had the best curriculum, real hands-on training, and instructors who cared about helping you succeed.”
Learning in a Relaxed, Hands-On Environment
When Tim arrived at NRVTA’s campus in Athens, Texas, he immediately noticed the difference. “The instructors here are amazing,” he said. “They keep you engaged, they make you laugh, and the learning environment is relaxed but full of information. You never feel overwhelmed — it’s the perfect mix of structure and fun.”
He began with Week One: RV Fundamentals, where students learn tip-to-tail how every system in an RV works — electrical, plumbing, propane, heating, air conditioning, and more. “Week one gives you everything you need to be confident working on your own unit,” Tim said. “You’re not just reading about it — you’re touching the components, running diagnostics, and seeing how everything connects.”
Confidence That Lasts a Lifetime
For Tim, the most valuable part of NRVTA’s training was the confidence it gave him. “I wanted to show my family that I still got this,” he said. “Even though RVing was new to me, I knew that if I could understand it, I could take care of it.”
That confidence didn’t just come from the books — it came from the people. “The instructors and training assistants are on point,” Tim said. “They’re patient, funny, and full of knowledge. They make sure you leave here feeling capable.”
Why NRVTA Stands Out
Whether you’re an RV owner looking to maintain your own rig or someone exploring a career as a mobile RV technician, Tim says the NRVTA is the perfect place to start. “If you want to learn how to work on your own RV, I highly recommend coming to NRVTA,” he said. “The Fundamentals course will give you everything you need to be confident. And if you want to go further, you can continue into the technician or inspector tracks.”
For Tim, what started as a desire to understand his RV has turned into something much more — self-reliance, confidence, and pride in taking control of his own adventures.
