Learn Before You Buy an RV! Javier Torres Trains at the National RV Training Academy

For Javier of Dallas, Texas, buying an RV wasn’t a quick decision. As a husband and father of two, he wanted to make sure his family’s investment in the RV lifestyle was both smart and sustainable. Before making the purchase, Javier did what few new RVers think to do — he enrolled at the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas to learn how RVs actually work.

“My wife and I have been renting different types of RVs to see what fits us best,” Javier said. “Before buying one, I wanted to get trained and really understand what we were getting into. I’m thrilled that I did.”

Building Knowledge Before Ownership

Javier discovered NRVTA through YouTube, where he watched countless videos from instructors like Todd Henson and other NRVTA graduates explaining everything from water systems to solar power. The idea of learning directly from industry professionals appealed to him — especially since he didn’t yet own an RV but wanted to make an informed choice.

He enrolled in the RV Fundamentals course, a one-week program that covers the most important systems in an RV: electrical, plumbing, propane, and appliances. The course mixes classroom lessons with hands-on labs, allowing students to take apart real components and learn how they function.

“Getting that hands-on experience really made things click,” Javier said. “I feel confident now that I can handle maintenance and even some repairs myself instead of paying someone else to do it.”

About the National RV Training Academy

Located in Athens, Texas, the National RV Training Academy is the country’s largest hands-on training facility for RV owners, technicians, and inspectors. Students from across the U.S. travel to NRVTA to learn directly from experienced professionals in real-world lab settings.

NRVTA offers multiple training paths, including:

  • RV Fundamentals – Ideal for RV owners who want to understand and maintain their own RVs.
  • Certified RV Technician Program – For those pursuing a full-time career in RV repair.
  • RV Inspector Certification – For individuals who want to perform pre-purchase inspections for buyers and sellers.
  • Advanced Solar and Electrical Courses – Designed for those ready to master energy independence.

Students can even live on-site in their own RVs, making the training experience fully immersive. The academy’s partnership with the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA) ensures graduates receive nationally recognized certifications.

Hands-On Learning for Everyday RVers

Javier’s week at NRVTA focused on practical, real-world training that applies to every RV owner — whether you’re a weekend traveler or a future full-timer. He learned how to test power systems, check for leaks, understand propane safety, and perform routine maintenance tasks that can save hundreds (or thousands) of dollars over time.

“Anyone can do this,” Javier said. “You just need the right training. After this week, I’m confident I can handle most of the basics myself.”

Looking Ahead: Solar and Beyond

Javier’s next goal is to return to NRVTA for solar installation training. With more families embracing off-grid living and renewable energy solutions, NRVTA’s solar program teaches students how to install and maintain solar systems that power RVs anywhere in the country.

“I’m excited to come back and learn more,” Javier said. “The instructors were great, and the hands-on labs made everything easy to understand. I highly recommend anyone thinking about RVing to come out here and get educated.”

Empowering Future RV Owners

For Javier, the biggest takeaway wasn’t just learning about RV systems — it was gaining confidence. Before owning an RV, he now understands how to maintain one, what to look for when buying, and how to prevent costly mistakes.

Whether you’re a current RV owner, future buyer, or someone curious about a new career path, the National RV Training Academy provides the hands-on education to help you make informed decisions and enjoy your RV with confidence.
