When Bobby Simpson decided to take on the challenge of learning how to repair RVs, he wasn’t just signing up for a class — he was proving that limitations don’t define potential. At 56 years old, legally blind, and newly living full-time in his RV, Bobby wanted to understand how his rig worked so he could maintain it safely and travel with confidence. His journey led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas, where he discovered a supportive environment, hands-on learning, and a community that believed in his ability as much as he did.
Learning Without Limits
Bobby was diagnosed with Leber’s Optic Atrophy, a rare genetic condition that affects vision. But that didn’t stop him from pursuing a new skill set and a new direction in life. “If I can do this, you can do this,” he said with a smile. “I didn’t want my disability to stand in the way of doing something I love.”
When Bobby decided to live in his RV full-time, he quickly realized that understanding how to maintain and troubleshoot it was essential. “If I’m going to live in it, I should know how to work on it,” he said. That realization led him to NRVTA — the country’s largest hands-on training facility for RV technicians and inspectors.
The first few days were a lot to take in, but Bobby said the instructors and teaching assistants were incredible. “The folks here at NRVTA are awesome,” he said. “They don’t just teach — they help you truly understand what you’re doing.”
With patience, encouragement, and hands-on learning, Bobby thrived. “The instructors met me where I was,” he said. “They made sure I could participate fully in the labs, and by the end, I was doing everything right alongside my classmates.”
About the National RV Training Academy
Located in Athens, Texas, the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) provides world-class education for anyone interested in RV maintenance, inspection, and repair. Students from all walks of life — from recent high school graduates to retirees — come to NRVTA to gain the skills needed to work confidently in the growing RV service industry.
NRVTA’s programs range from short-term owner courses to full certification programs recognized by the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA). Students learn in a hands-on environment where they practice on real RV components — testing circuits, troubleshooting appliances, and learning safe propane and electrical diagnostics.
The academy’s mission is simple: to empower people with the skills and confidence to maintain their RVs or build new careers as certified technicians and inspectors.
Turning Knowledge into Freedom
For Bobby, the NRVTA experience went beyond technical training — it gave him independence. He plans to use his new skills not only to maintain his own RV but also to help others he meets along the way. “My goal after school is to retire, travel, and help people in campgrounds,” he said. “I want to educate them about how to take care of their RVs — and, of course, make a little money while I’m at it.”
That combination of freedom and purpose is exactly what NRVTA hopes to give its students. For many, learning to repair RVs isn’t just about fixing systems — it’s about taking control of their lifestyle. Whether you’re an RVer who wants to be self-reliant or someone seeking a new career path, the skills learned at NRVTA open the door to opportunity.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Others
Bobby’s story is proof that no obstacle is too great when you’re willing to take the first step. His determination and optimism inspired everyone around him — classmates and instructors alike. “You shouldn’t let disability or anything like that stand in your way,” he said. “If you want to do it, you can.”
His message resonates far beyond the classroom. In a world where many people talk themselves out of trying new things, Bobby stands as a reminder that courage, persistence, and the right environment can make anything possible.
