Get your RV Technician Certification in as little as 5 weeks!

The idea of punching a clock or waiting for direction didnโt fit who he was. He wanted something newโsomething that offered both independence and purpose. Thatโs when he found the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.
โI knew I wanted to work for myself,โ Bob said. โI wasnโt going to just sit at home. My goal was to come to NRVTA and learn how to become an RV technician so I could start my own business and set my own hours.โ
Learning a Whole New Trade
Already an RV owner, Bob started researching how to maintain and repair his own rig. Thatโs when he discovered NRVTA, home of the Big Red Schoolhouseโa hands-on training center that teaches everything from RV Fundamentals to advanced certification for mobile RV technicians.
โWhen I arrived here, everyone was so welcoming,โ he said. โYou start with one week of RV Fundamentals, where you learn tip to tail about your RV or any RV. After that first week, you realize all the things you thought you knewโand how much you didnโt.โ
NRVTAโs Fundamentals course introduces students to electrical systems, propane, plumbing, appliances, and safety. Itโs the foundation for the five-week Advanced RV Technician program, where students learn to diagnose and repair systems like air conditioners, furnaces, refrigerators, and water heaters.
Training That Builds Confidence
For Bob, the biggest surprise wasnโt just how much he learnedโit was how confident he felt doing it.
โThere may be 10 or 15 refrigerators in one room,โ he said. โYou have to troubleshoot each one. That kind of repetition is fantastic for learning. When else are you going to diagnose 15 refrigerators before ever working with your first customer?โ
That hands-on repetition, combined with NRVTAโs lab-based training, gave him the confidence to launch his own mobile service business. โThe instructors are incredibly knowledgeable,โ he said. โYou do wiring diagrams in class, then go into the lab and apply what you learned. You canโt get that kind of training anywhere else.โ
Building a Future on the Road
Now, Bobโs next chapter includes starting a mobile RV repair business in his communityโhelping other RV owners stay on the road while enjoying his own freedom and flexibility. He plans to return to Athens soon for the generator and solar courses, continuing to expand his skill set.
โWhat Iโve gained here is more than technical knowledge,โ he said. โItโs the ability to diagnose problems, solve them, and feel confident doing it on my own.โ
Why NRVTA Stands Out
The National RV Training Academy has become a leading destination for anyone looking to change careers, gain independence, or simply understand their RV better. Located just outside Dallas in Athens, Texas, NRVTA offers nationally recognized training through the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA).
Graduates go on to start their own businesses, providing certified mobile RV repair and inspection services across the country. From local campgrounds to national parks, these independent technicians are reshaping how RV service gets doneโbringing expertise directly to the customer instead of forcing RV owners to wait weeks for a dealership appointment.
For many, like Bob, NRVTA isnโt just a schoolโitโs a launchpad for a new lifestyle.
โThis has been a phenomenal experience,โ he said. โIf anyoneโs considering taking RV Fundamentals or any of the advanced classes, itโs two thumbs up from me.โ
