When Mary from Granbury, Texas, and her husband bought their first fifth wheel, they were thrilled — until reality set in.
“When you buy an RV,” she said, “once that sale’s done and you’re pulling out of that parking lot, it’s kind of like welcome to the Wild West. Nobody tells you anything.”
That experience sent Mary searching online for help — and that’s where she discovered Todd Henson’s Tech Tip Tuesday videos.
Getting Started Online: The RVTechCourse.com Home Study Course
“I first heard about the school through YouTube,” Mary said. “Then I started watching Todd’s Tech Tip Tuesdays, and that’s kind of where it started.”
She soon found the RV Owners Home Study Course at RVTechCourse.com, a self-paced online training program created by the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA).
“For anybody who’s new to RVing — or even if you’ve been RVing for years — you’ll get a lot out of it,” Mary said. “I learned so much.”
The Home Study Course covers everything from electrical systems and water heaters to propane safety, troubleshooting, and maintenance tips — all designed to help RV owners save time, money, and frustration by learning how their systems actually work.
Taking It Further with Hands-On Training at NRVTA
After completing the online program, Mary wanted to take her skills further.
“I decided I wanted more hands-on experience,” she said. “So I signed up for the on-campus class at the National RV Training Academy in Athens, Texas.”
The RV Fundamentals Course gave her real-world experience working on live systems — air conditioners, water heaters, and electrical components — using diagnostic tools and meters with instructor guidance.
“It’s one thing to watch a tutorial,” Mary said. “It’s another thing to pick up a meter and test circuits yourself. That’s where the confidence comes from.”
Confidence and Self-Reliance on the Road
Now, Mary feels empowered to handle her own repairs and keep traveling with peace of mind.
“At the very least,” she said, “I understand my own RV now. I’ve built a small spare parts inventory and I know how to fix the things that are most likely to break. It’s made all the difference.”
Her advice to other RV owners is simple — and it comes from experience.
“Educate yourself,” she said. “Even if you don’t plan on becoming a technician, take the home study course. It’s worth every penny. Once you understand your RV, you’ll actually enjoy RV life — which is what it’s supposed to be about.”
