Why This Pennsylvania RV Technician Chose NRVTA Over Other Schools and Never Looked Back

For Andy, a small-town Pennsylvania resident about an hour east of Pittsburgh, learning to repair RVs wasn’t new — but mastering the why behind each repair was.

He had already enrolled in an online RV technician certification course from another school. That school had a reputation for preparing students to work at dealership service centers, where the job often meant replacing parts rather than diagnosing the real issue.

“I wanted to come to a school that wasn’t just going to train techs to swap parts,” Andy said. “I wanted to learn the theory of operation, understand how systems work, and also learn how to run my own business.”

That search led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.

Why NRVTA Was Different

After seeing one of Todd Henson’s Tech Tip Tuesday videos online, Andy decided to learn more about NRVTA. What he found was a training program unlike any other — one that emphasized hands-on learning, real-world troubleshooting, and business readiness.

“I asked my student advisor if I needed to take Fundamentals,” Andy recalled. “After all, I already work in the industry.”

The answer was yes — and Andy quickly realized why.

“I learned far more that first week than I ever thought possible,” he said. “That same pattern continued every week I was here.”

Real Skills. Real Tools. Real Experience.

At NRVTA, students don’t just learn about systems from a book — they use live equipment in lab environments to test, troubleshoot, and repair RV components like air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, and electrical systems.

“I’ve had my hands on A/C units, fridges, furnaces — not just the appliances, but the tools too,” Andy said. “It’s one thing to watch a video. It’s another thing entirely to wire a system yourself and see what happens when it’s not working right.”

He described the experience as both educational and humbling. “It reminded me that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn — especially when you’re surrounded by instructors with decades of experience.”

A Culture of Learning and Community

One of the biggest surprises for Andy was the community he found at NRVTA.

“Hands-on learning is huge, but just as important is getting to talk to your peers and instructors,” he said. “You’ll succeed in the long term by investing not just in yourself, but in your peers and your continuing education.”

Through NRVTA’s partnerships with the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA), graduates like Andy join a nationwide network of certified professionals — all committed to raising standards in the RV service industry.

A New Kind of RV Education

“If you’re on the fence about attending NRVTA,” Andy said, “just do it. There are few places where you’ll find this level of training, mentorship, and real-world experience.”

He summed it up perfectly: “Having the chance to sit at the feet of masters — to stand on the shoulders of giants — is something you just can’t get anywhere else.”
