Why This Pennsylvania RV Technician Chose NRVTA Over Other Schools and Never Looked Back

For Andy, a small-town Pennsylvania resident about an hour east of Pittsburgh, learning to repair RVs wasnโ€™t new โ€” but mastering the why behind each repair was.

He had already enrolled in an online RV technician certification course from another school. That school had a reputation for preparing students to work at dealership service centers, where the job often meant replacing parts rather than diagnosing the real issue.

โ€œI wanted to come to a school that wasnโ€™t just going to train techs to swap parts,โ€ Andy said. โ€œI wanted to learn the theory of operation, understand how systems work, and also learn how to run my own business.โ€

That search led him to the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas.

Why NRVTA Was Different

After seeing one of Todd Hensonโ€™s Tech Tip Tuesday videos online, Andy decided to learn more about NRVTA. What he found was a training program unlike any other โ€” one that emphasized hands-on learning, real-world troubleshooting, and business readiness.

โ€œI asked my student advisor if I needed to take Fundamentals,โ€ Andy recalled. โ€œAfter all, I already work in the industry.โ€

The answer was yes โ€” and Andy quickly realized why.

โ€œI learned far more that first week than I ever thought possible,โ€ he said. โ€œThat same pattern continued every week I was here.โ€

Real Skills. Real Tools. Real Experience.

At NRVTA, students donโ€™t just learn about systems from a book โ€” they use live equipment in lab environments to test, troubleshoot, and repair RV components like air conditioners, refrigerators, water heaters, and electrical systems.

โ€œIโ€™ve had my hands on A/C units, fridges, furnaces โ€” not just the appliances, but the tools too,โ€ Andy said. โ€œItโ€™s one thing to watch a video. Itโ€™s another thing entirely to wire a system yourself and see what happens when itโ€™s not working right.โ€

He described the experience as both educational and humbling. โ€œIt reminded me that no matter how much you know, thereโ€™s always more to learn โ€” especially when youโ€™re surrounded by instructors with decades of experience.โ€

A Culture of Learning and Community

One of the biggest surprises for Andy was the community he found at NRVTA.

โ€œHands-on learning is huge, but just as important is getting to talk to your peers and instructors,โ€ he said. โ€œYouโ€™ll succeed in the long term by investing not just in yourself, but in your peers and your continuing education.โ€

Through NRVTAโ€™s partnerships with the RV Technician Association of America (RVTAA) and the National RV Inspectors Association (NRVIA), graduates like Andy join a nationwide network of certified professionals โ€” all committed to raising standards in the RV service industry.

A New Kind of RV Education

โ€œIf youโ€™re on the fence about attending NRVTA,โ€ Andy said, โ€œjust do it. There are few places where youโ€™ll find this level of training, mentorship, and real-world experience.โ€

He summed it up perfectly: โ€œHaving the chance to sit at the feet of masters โ€” to stand on the shoulders of giants โ€” is something you just canโ€™t get anywhere else.โ€
